Moscow's Hidden Gem: A Walk on the Glass Floor at the Ostankino Tower
I've always been fascinated by Moscow's iconic landmarks, and one that never fails to impress is the Ostankino Tower.
I've walked by it countless times with friends and family, mesmerized by its colorful display, like a giant Christmas tree that seems to come alive at night.
The Ostankino Tower is a 540.1-meter-tall broadcasting tower located in Moscow, Russia. It was designed by architect Nikolai Nikitin and was initially intended to be 533 meters tall, but the addition of a flagpole brought it up to its current height.
The tower offers two types of tours: the Panoramic Moscow 360° tour and the Inside the Tower tour. The Panoramic Moscow 360° tour allows visitors to explore the tower on their own, taking in the breathtaking views from the observation deck at 337 meters. The Inside the Tower tour, on the other hand, requires visitors to take the elevator to the 85th and 337th floors, accompanied by a guide.
Visitors can purchase tickets online or at the box office, but it's recommended to buy them in advance, especially on weekends and holidays. The ticket prices vary depending on the day of the week and time of visit, with prices ranging from 1300 to 2300 rubles for adults and 900 to 1800 rubles for children.
Before entering the tower, visitors must go through security checks, which include metal detectors, scanners, and a scanning cabinet. The security checks are strict, but the process is efficient and smooth.
Once inside, visitors can explore the interactive multimedia complex and the museum showcasing the construction of the Ostankino TV Tower. The museum features interactive panels and screens with information about the tower's history, engineering features, and technical specifications.
The observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of Moscow, with interactive screens and binoculars that allow visitors to see for miles. The glass floor is a unique feature that allows visitors to walk on a glass surface 337 meters above the ground.
Visitors can also grab a bite to eat at the Seventh Heaven restaurant, which is located right below the observation deck. The restaurant has three separate dining areas, each with its own unique atmosphere and menu. The menu features a range of dishes, from soups to salads to main courses, as well as a selection of desserts.
After enjoying our meal, we decided to check out the silver hall out of curiosity. We didn't get a chance to take a closer look, as we were stopped by an administrator at the entrance who told us that if we weren't planning to stay in the silver hall, we couldn't enter - it's not a viewing area. That was a bit of a bummer, to be honest!
One thing that really stood out to me was the fact that there's no time limit for visiting the tower. I was worried that since tours start every hour, we'd be rushed, but nope - no one's going to come and tell you your time's up. You can take your time, which is great, although to be honest, you won't be there for long. We spent about 30 minutes on the observation deck and then hung out in the restaurant for another 40 minutes, so you're not really doing anything after an hour or an hour and a half.
I have to say, I didn't expect much from this tour, but what I saw was really cool. The Ostankino Tower is a landmark in Moscow and a real symbol of the city - I love visiting places like that. The views are stunning, the food is great, and for the experience I got, I think the entrance fee was totally worth it. I'd definitely recommend it!
