The Dark Side of Omeprazole: What Doctors Don't Warn You About
Hello everyone!
I've been dealing with stomach issues since I was a teenager, and over the years, I've relied on Almagel or Omeprazole to get me through the tough times. These medications would provide temporary relief, but I've always ignored the side effects.
However, a few years ago, I had to take a proton pump inhibitor frequently due to a prolonged back hernia treatment and a Helicobacter pylori infection. That's when I experienced firsthand the benefits and drawbacks of taking Omeprazole.
Omeprazole 20mg is easily available in any pharmacy and is relatively affordable. I've never been asked for a prescription, despite the "available by prescription only" label on the packaging.
The price for a pack containing 28 enteric-coated capsules usually ranges from 100 to 150 rubles, depending on the pharmacy and manufacturer. I purchased Omeprazole OBL for 108 rubles.
In the pack, there are four blisters with seven capsules each. The expiration date is indicated on both the blisters and the packaging. The instructions for use are included in the pack.
The capsule is easy to remove from the packaging. The foil on the blister is dense but opens smoothly.
The capsule is semi-transparent, so you can see what's inside.
I had no trouble swallowing it.
Omeprazole is usually prescribed after back surgery, or during treatment for a Helicobacter pylori infection. Sometimes, I'd take it for a short course to alleviate heartburn and stomach pain.
The dosage and duration of treatment always depend on the specific issue I'm experiencing, so it's up to my doctor to decide.
I've been prescribed omeprazole for anywhere from 7 to 14 days, and sometimes for up to 4-8 weeks. Occasionally, I'd take it just once or twice, rather than following a full course.
I'd take omeprazole either 30 minutes before meals or at night, swallowing the capsule whole with a small amount of water. If I needed it, I'd take it on the spot – omeprazole needs to be taken before meals, but if I experienced pain after eating, I'd take it straight away.
I've taken omeprazole quite frequently, and it's always worked for me. Heartburn and acid reflux would subside, and stomach pain would disappear – although these symptoms would usually return once I made a dietary mistake.
Omeprazole would usually alleviate my symptoms quickly, but if the pain was severe, I'd need to take it for longer.
I always kept omeprazole on hand, as it was my go-to medication for stomach pain. But I had no idea it could cause harm – especially with long-term use.
It turns out that omeprazole can lower your magnesium levels. I noticed this myself, even without blood tests – just by my symptoms.
After taking omeprazole, I'd experience anxiety, insomnia, and heart palpitations. It wasn't until I got my blood tested that I discovered I had a magnesium deficiency.
I was puzzled as to why this was happening, given that I was taking magnesium supplements – my levels would rise, only to drop again.
Secondly, omeprazole can lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency, which caused me to experience anemia. I'd feel weak and lethargic all the time, and I'd often take blood tests to monitor my levels.
I have to admit, I didn't make the connection between omeprazole and its side effects until I read the instructions cover to cover. We rarely read instructions fully, because omeprazole seems like a harmless medication.
Omeprazole works well and quickly to reduce stomach acid, but this can lead to severe deficiencies and other health problems.
Because of the reduced acidity, all vitamins, minerals, and beneficial substances start to be poorly absorbed. This leads to other problems and uncomfortable symptoms.
In my blood tests, my overall protein and ferritin levels plummeted, which is hard to raise just through diet. Before taking omeprazole, I didn't have these issues. On top of that, I experienced bloating and stomach discomfort.
I've been treating Helicobacter pylori for a long time and took omeprazole, then rabeprazole, but no doctor warned me about the possible side effects. And yet, low stomach acid is just as bad.
It's like we're treating one issue and damaging another. And then we go back to the doctor, and they prescribe more medication. It's a vicious cycle.
In summary, I want to say that if you're on a long course of proton pump inhibitors and a strict diet to reduce stomach acid, you should keep an eye on your magnesium levels in the blood, vitamin B12, overall protein, and ferritin. Otherwise, you might end up with severe deficiencies that are hard to correct.
Omeprazole isn't as harmless as it seems at first glance. Docs often prescribe it for digestive issues, and it's usually for long-term use. But in the end, it can cause some pretty serious reactions. So, make sure to read the instructions carefully and listen to your body.
