Northwest Russia's Lakeland region is a treasure trove of natural beauty, and I've been lucky enough to experience it firsthand. The medieval architecture of the area is impressive, but it's the serene landscapes that surround it that'll leave you breathless.
I've always been drawn to the rugged charm of the Finnish landscape, and the Northwest region is no exception. For those looking to escape the heat of the south, the Northwest is a fantastic destination – and it's not just about the stunning scenery.
The region is home to an incredible array of lakes, rocky outcroppings, and pine forests. It's a nature enthusiast's dream come true, and I feel grateful to have experienced it.
For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of amazing spots to explore in the area. And for those who prefer a more comfortable, organized vacation, there are plenty of great options too – like the Tapiola resort, which I've had the chance to visit as a frequent guest and local resident.
The Tapiola resort is one of the oldest in the area, with over 20 years of experience providing top-notch service to its guests. Considering the cost of visiting and staying here, I think it's safe to say that the resort has earned its good reputation – and the steady stream of visitors is proof of that.
Tapiola is situated about 10-15 kilometers from the center of Vyborg, in the settlement of Gvardeyskaya station. The main feature is that the base is stretched along the shore of the Big Forest Lake – literally – and it's an incredible experience.
For summer guests, this is the perfect opportunity to boil a sauna on the shore and, after a good steam, dive into the cool water right away. In winter, you can walk endlessly on the frozen lake, taking in the incredible natural scenery around you.
Winter is a time for cozying up in a covered pool, a restaurant, or one of the resort's cozy rooms – or even a cottage with saunas. And of course, there's winter fishing to enjoy.
In summer, it's all about boats, catamarans, shashlik, saunas on the shore, and swimming – plus fishing, mushrooms, and berries...
We, as a family, absolutely love this base and visit our friends several times a year.
I have to say, I was in a pretty remote area, and my phone signal was non-existent. But even if I had no internet, I wouldn't have noticed – my family members were too busy staring at their phones on vacation. Meanwhile, I was strolling around the immaculately manicured grounds of this luxury resort, and I couldn't help but appreciate the surroundings. I mean, where am I, exactly?
My amateur photos speak for themselves.
Tapio is a resort complex that prides itself on tranquility and relaxation. You won't find rowdy groups of party animals here – this is a place for people who value their peace and quiet, and who come to unwind from the stresses of everyday life.
The resort offers a range of cottages, each accommodating different numbers of people. Some are situated right on the lake's edge, while others are nestled deep in the forest. There are also hotel rooms available.
The resort boasts a year-round mini water park, complete with an adult and kids' pool, a Finnish sauna, and a hammam. Guests can also enjoy spa services, massages, and other relaxing treats. The main building features a bar and restaurant, as well as a banquet hall.
Tapio is also a popular choice for hosting weddings and other special events. The best part is that you can arrive and take a stroll around the property without having to rent a house.
You've got to let them know you're coming, though – the free parking lot is only for a certain number of guests, and they keep an eye on things to avoid overcrowding.
Walking around is totally fine, and in the summer you can even rent some boat gear and take a romantic boat ride. This place has a really laid-back vibe that's perfect for people who want to relax without all the fuss.
