A Hidden Gem in Yekaterinburg's Heart
I recently stumbled upon a breathtaking spot in the center of Yekaterinburg, and I'm super excited to share my story with you. The Nizhne-Tikhvinsky Nunnery is a must-see, and it's been on my mind for years.
Nizhne-Tikhvinsky Nunnery, Yekaterinburg
Back in the mid-19th century, this nunnery became a hub for women's education in the Ural region, with a four-class school for women on the premises.
I visited this place about 10 years ago with my friend and her mom, but I didn't really remember much about it. Then, I spent four years studying at the university nearby, and I'd often walk past it on my way to my friend's place. Recently, I started seeing videos of the nunnery's beautifully restored grounds, and I was blown away by the beauty of it all. I grabbed my friend, and we rushed to check it out.
The grounds are stunning, with massive rose bushes, hydrangeas, and towering trees everywhere. It's hard to know where to look first! The Nizhne-Tikhvinsky Nunnery played a significant role in establishing spiritual and material foundations for many women's monasteries in the Permskaya, Tobolskaya, and later, Yekaterinburg eparchies. Many of the nunnery's sisters went on to become abbesses of these monasteries.
The nunnery itself is a high-spirited place, with several small chapels and a large church store. There's also a monastery café that's worth mentioning. The café is a standout, with a wide range of delicious dishes and desserts. Prices are very reasonable – a cup of coffee costs 100 rubles, pastries and cakes are around 200 rubles, and a slice of lasagna or a waffle with king prawns is around 350 rubles. This is a city center location, so you'd expect higher prices. But the food is both tasty and visually appealing. You can also enjoy the outdoor seating area.
The nunnery's store sells a vast array of handmade cosmetics made by the nuns. The prices are surprisingly affordable for the quality. One thing to note is that you can only buy candles at the store, not in the church itself.
This place is truly breathtaking. It's clear that a lot of love, money, and effort went into restoring it. Every corner of the nunnery exudes a sense of spirituality and tranquility, making it a perfect spot to spend time, regardless of the hour.As I walked through the nunnery's grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer beauty of the place. The gardens are meticulously maintained, with vibrant flowers and lush greenery everywhere. The sound of birds chirping and the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind created a peaceful atmosphere that was hard to resist.
The nunnery's history is also fascinating, with a rich legacy of women's education and spiritual growth. It's clear that this place has been a hub of activity for centuries, and it's wonderful to see it thriving today.
One of the highlights of my visit was the monastery café, which serves a wide range of delicious dishes and desserts. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is both tasty and visually appealing. I highly recommend trying some of the local specialties, such as the lasagna or the waffle with king prawns.
Another highlight of the nunnery is the store, which sells a vast array of handmade cosmetics made by the nuns. The prices are surprisingly affordable for the quality, and it's a great place to pick up some unique souvenirs.
I'd highly recommend visiting the Nizhne-Tikhvinsky Nunnery. It's a truly breathtaking place that offers a unique glimpse into the history and culture of Yekaterinburg. Whether you're interested in history, spirituality, or simply want to experience the beauty of the city, this place is a must-visit.
