New Athos' Hidden Gem: A Must-Visit for Its Breathtaking Surroundings
I'd been to Abkhazia before, but I still felt like I had to visit New Athos. Finally, our group tour arrived, and we set out to explore this beautiful area.
We hopped on a microbus and made our way to the New Athos monastery, caves, and on the way back, we stopped to check out the waterfall and the Psycyrha station (Psysrza).
The Psycyrha station is an inactive railway station in Abkhazia, which stopped operating during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict. I'm guessing it was a popular stop for tourists back in the day, just like it is now.
In the Soviet era, visitors who came to New Athos would exit at this station, so I think it was a real highlight back then.
What draws tourists here isn't the railway platform or station itself, but the man-made waterfall and the nearby lake. That's what brought us here.
The lake is an incredible turquoise color, and you can see people paddling around on boats or catamarans. I wasn't interested in the price, but those who wanted to experience it were waiting in line.
When I was standing by the lake, taking in the view, I didn't even realize that in the distance, there's an original Japanese-style cottage that looks like a pagoda, and it's actually the station.
That's where the ticket booth and waiting area for passengers used to be.
It wasn't until I got closer that I understood what it was. You look at it, and nostalgia hits you, especially since I was born in the 80s, so I still remember the Soviet era.
I can imagine how lucky those who saw this building when it was first built must have felt. This original station was designed by the talented Georgian architect, Georgi Lezhava.
The architecture is amazing – we didn't have stations like this in our Soviet era, at least not in the south.
The station was opened in 1944 and was originally named Dacha, as there was one of Stalin's dachas nearby.
When I got to this train station, I was struck by how beautiful it is. You can tell the builders put a lot of effort into the ornate details and the white columns that frame the building. Unfortunately, it's clear that the station has seen better days - the walls are crumbling, the windows are broken, and it looks like they're not planning on restoring it anytime soon.
The architecture is still pretty impressive, though. The latticework and intricate patterns are a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. It's a shame that it's been neglected for so long.
I didn't take any photos of the inside, to be honest. It's not exactly the most impressive space, and I wasn't planning on writing a review of the station in the first place.
The platform area has also seen better days. The lamps are hanging precariously, and the once-beautiful fence is now overgrown and worn down.
On the other side of the station, though, the views are stunning. The area is a bit overgrown, but it's still beautiful, and the mountains in the background are breathtaking.
Speaking of which, the location is truly incredible. If you follow the tracks, you can see a sign for a tourist route that takes you through the Psycyrha River gorge.
Of course, if you head straight, you'll end up in a tunnel. And if you keep going, there's another one. We ended up taking the tunnel because the crowd was heading back the other way. To be honest, I'm not sure if there are any safety precautions in place - it looks like trains might be able to pass through the station without stopping.
While we were there, I didn't see any trains, but it's clear that the station is abandoned. So, be careful when you're there - it's easy to get complacent, but you don't want to get hit by a train.
I'm glad the guide took us to the Psycyrrha train station - it was a great addition to the trip, even if it wasn't originally on my radar. I mean, I was mostly stoked about the New Afon Monastery and the cave, but this station was part of the prepaid tour, so I didn't have a say in the matter.
Despite the station's obvious need for renovation, the surrounding trees, lake, waterfall, and mountains are so beautiful that you can almost ignore the neglect. It's one of those places where the natural scenery is so stunning that it overshadows the rough-around-the-edges feel of the station itself.
Overall, I would highly recommend visiting the Psycyrrha train station as part of your trip to New Athos. The surrounding scenery is truly breathtaking, and it's a unique opportunity to see a piece of history up close.
Just be sure to exercise caution and follow any safety guidelines that may be in place.
With its stunning natural beauty and fascinating history, the Psycyrrha train station is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to New Athos.
