A Wild Departure from the First Two Books, and My Kid Loved It

summarizeEditor's Summary

I wasn't super familiar with Nikolai Nosov's Neskayka books from my childhood, but my kid devoured them. The third part, 'Neskayka on the Moon,' is a total game changer - it's a wild departure from the first two books, but in a good way. The series is full of interesting scientific and technological concepts, and the characters are relatable and engaging. My kid loved the adventure and the unique world-building.

A Wild Departure from the First Two Books, and My Kid Loved It
I wasn't super familiar with Nikolai Nosov's Neskayka books from my childhood, but my kid devoured them. Even the first part, 'The Adventures of Neskayka and his Friends,' was fragmented in my mind, existing only as thin Soviet booklets. So, I'd read bits about the hot air balloon, but it wasn't until I had kids that I fully immersed myself in the trilogy.
There are three parts:
The Adventures of Neskayka and his Friends,Neskayka in the Sunny CityNeskayka on the MoonThe first part is set in the Green City, where the shorties - Neskayka, Znak, Pilyulkin, Tubik, and the rest - live. It describes their daily life, who does what, and the journey on the hot air balloon invented by scientist Znak.
The second part sees Neskayka and two other shorties traveling to the Sunny City by car. And that's where the magic happens, along with transformations and lots of interesting scientific and technological stuff. There's a system for the fields, rotating houses, and a 'smart home' system in the hotel.
But 'Neskayka on the Moon' is a whole different story. Yeah, it starts with Znak discovering a lunar stone and its magnetic properties. And Neskayka and Panchik sneak into a rocket and accidentally blast off to the Moon without Znak and the others.
On the Moon, they don't encounter thrilling adventures, but... capitalism.
It's a total shock to their system, coming from the Green City where everyone shared everything. But on the Moon, it's all about making money and being rich.
They even have their own version of Mr. Krabs, who's obsessed with getting richer and richer. And there are all these talking characters, like Squidward, who's a bit of a grump.
And it's clear that these wealthy characters aren't exactly treating their employees well, who are working for peanuts.
There are plenty of scammers in this story too - like Miga and Julio, who are like the cat version of Basil. They're organizing a fake company, but it's all about making a quick buck.
It's a satirical story, for sure. I mean, take Pinocchio - it's a kids' story, but it's all about deception, money, and the evil Coachman.
Just like how there are newspapers for smart people and dumb people, this story has its own version of that. But it's more realistic, so I think 'The Little Space Traveler' is more suitable for elementary school kids who can understand this kind of story better.
Besides, there's the part about the difficult work of the wheel-turners and how salt used to be a luxury item until people learned how to produce it in large quantities - which is actually true.
I was surprised by the part about the nanny for dogs.
I've been a dog trainer and a kennel club member since I was a kid. Even back in the 90s, there weren't separate dog trainers – it was usually the breed leaders, owners, or handlers who did it. But Nosen predicted all this back in the 40s as a luxury only the wealthy could afford.
Check out this setup!
It's a bit jarring to see how different life is on the Moon compared to the Green City. I mean, in the Green City, everyone worked together and shared everything. But on the Moon, it's all about making money and being rich.
My son really enjoyed the entire trilogy. He listened to it along with 'Alice' until he was sick of it – he could probably recite it from memory. So, it's a matter of personal taste. Maybe adults see things more deeply because of their life experience, while kids have a different perspective. My daughter, on the other hand, didn't really connect with this part when she was younger.
Try checking it out from the library or listening to the audiobook.
But don't start with this part.
You can read about the first part – 'Nizhny's Adventures and Those of His Friends' – here.
