Editor's Summary

I've been struggling with weight loss for years, and I'm not alone. Many of us have tried every diet under the sun, only to end up right back where we started. But what if I told you that the key to weight loss might not be about cutting calories or exercising more, but about understanding how your body processes carbs? In this article, we'll explore the connection between carb metabolism and weight loss, and what you can do to boost your metabolism and reach your goals.

I've always been a foodie, and I love eating a lot and enjoying it. But, I've always wanted to be fit and toned, and it's hard to reconcile those two things. Like many girls, I've been searching for the culprit - my body composition. I've done bioimpedance tests, and it turns out I have a low muscle mass and high body fat percentage.

I've also had my thyroid hormones checked - TSH, T4, and AT-T - just in case there was something going on with my thyroid. And I've had my ferritin and D-3 levels checked, too. Everything's normal, it's just a matter of finding a healthy balance.

Eating disorders, or disordered eating, is a psychological condition characterized by a distorted relationship with food, your body, and weight.

People with eating disorders may overeat, severely restrict their food intake, or experience emotional distress due to their eating habits.

I've done my research, though - I've studied nutrition and learned about healthy eating. I've even worked as a personal trainer, teaching group fitness classes and helping people achieve their fitness goals.

Last summer, I decided to get all the tests that could affect my weight, including a blood glucose test.

Three months prior, I'd had a blood biochemistry test, which included glucose and insulin levels:

And two years ago:

At first, I tried to get the test through my local clinic, but it was a hassle getting an appointment with an endocrinologist. I finally got a referral for the test:

Blood glucose test for excess weightI had to bring 75g of glucose and 200ml of water, a cup, and a spoon.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out with the clinic, and I had to reschedule. I ended up getting the test done privately, along with all the other tests in a comprehensive blood panel.

In a private lab, they do an express test first to make sure it's safe to do the main test. They take a blood sample from your finger, and a few minutes later, they tell you if it's okay to proceed.

Glucose tolerance test review for non-pregnant womenThen, they sprinkle 75g of pure glucose (it looks like powdered sugar) into the water, mix it, and tell you to drink it quickly.

I'd read some pretty scary stories about how awful it is to drink that much sweet water. You'd immediately get nauseous, the drink wouldn't stay down, and so on. Maybe those are just urban legends from pregnant women who have to take this test more often. And they're always complaining about morning sickness, heartburn, or a wonky moon phase (I was pregnant once, so I get it).

But if you drink it all at once and don't drag it out, it's actually pretty tolerable. I drank it and forgot about it. Taking those bitter pills is a million times harder.

I drank it and they took my blood right away.

They told me to sit and wait (I'm not even sure how long it was – an hour, an hour and a half, or two hours). I just sat there waiting for the inevitable.

But nothing happened. Nope, not a thing. My stomach just growled from hunger – what's this glucose doing to it when it's used to a breakfast champion's meal?

After a while, they took my blood again and let me go home.

I didn't experience any unpleasant sensations that day. It was just like taking a regular blood test.

A few days later, I got my test results via email.

Blood glucose test reviewsMy glucose levels before and after the test were both within normal limits. Whew. And my insulin levels were fine too (whew).

The cost of the express test was 130 rubles, the Glucose Tolerance Test and insulin combo was 1300 rubles plus 130 rubles for the blood sample.

I took the same tests last year, and my glucose and insulin levels were both within normal limits:

So, if your regular blood tests show normal glucose and insulin levels, there's no need to take the stress test.

I was trying to figure out if my carb metabolism was to blame for my weight gain. Neither the regular test nor the stress test showed any abnormalities. So, it's back to the basics – eat less and move more – a truth that's easier said than done.

Stay healthy, everyone!

I lost 10 kg on a rational diet. My meals are always based on the "plate model." The plate model is a simple and affordable way to create a balanced diet without worrying about calories and weighing your food

It's really tasty, I swear! Five months without sugar – minus 6 kg

What are these sugar-free candies? Do they taste like real ones or not? And why do people buy them if they don't have endocrine disorders related to carbohydrate metabolism?

Featured FAQ

What is carb metabolism, and how does it affect weight loss?

Carb metabolism refers to the way your body processes carbohydrates, which are found in foods like bread, pasta, and sugary snacks. When you eat carbs, your body breaks them down into glucose, which is then used for energy or stored as fat. If you have a slow carb metabolism, you may be more likely to store carbs as fat, leading to weight gain.

How can I optimize my carb metabolism for weight loss?

To optimize your carb metabolism, try to focus on whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins. Aim to limit your intake of refined carbs like white bread and sugary snacks, and consider incorporating healthy fats like avocado and nuts into your diet.

Will I need to cut out carbs entirely to optimize my metabolism?

No, you don't need to cut out carbs entirely to optimize your metabolism. Instead, focus on making healthy choices and balancing your carb intake with protein and healthy fats.

Can carb metabolism affect my energy levels?

Yes, carb metabolism can affect your energy levels. If you have a slow carb metabolism, you may feel sluggish or lethargic, especially after eating carbs. By optimizing your carb metabolism, you can increase your energy levels and feel more alert and focused.

How long does it take to see results from optimizing my carb metabolism?

It may take some time to see results from optimizing your carb metabolism, as it can take several weeks for your body to adjust to the changes you're making. Be patient, and don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results.

Can I work with a healthcare professional to optimize my carb metabolism?

Yes, you can work with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian to develop a personalized plan for optimizing your carb metabolism. They can help you identify areas for improvement and provide guidance on making healthy changes to your diet and lifestyle.
