Stardust by Neil Gaiman

I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's writing style, and Stardust's one of my top picks. This classic fantasy novel's got it all: adventure, magic, and romance. I've read it multiple times and still can't get enough.

Hello everyone!

I'm a huge fan of the classic tale 'Stardust' starring Charlie Cox. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I've rewatched it multiple times, always with a huge smile on my face.

I recently discovered that the movie is actually based on a book by none other than Neil Gaiman himself! I was pretty surprised to learn that, since I'd read a few of Gaiman's books before and wasn't a huge fan. But 'Stardust' was a must-read for me, just to compare it to the movie.

Stardust bookGeneral Information

Date of first publication → 1999Number of pages in the e-book → 321, I finished reading it in just a couple of hours. It's written in the fantasy genre.

Plot and Characters

The story draws you in from the very first page, introducing you to the fictional world of 'The Gorge'. Every 9 years, a fair comes to the other side of the Gorge, and people are allowed to cross without any issues, but on any other day, it's strictly forbidden, and the Gorge is guarded.

Stardust bookThe first chapter introduces us to the main character's father, but the story really takes off 17 years later, when Tristram becomes a young man, head over heels in love with a girl named Victoria. Tristram promises Victoria he'll bring her a star that's fallen on the other side of the Gorge, and that's where his perilous and action-packed journey begins. One philosopher once asked: are we human because we look at the stars? Or do we look at the stars because we're human?

My Impressions and Thoughts

When I first started reading, I felt like checking out the review titles on this website, just to see what others had to say about the book's shortcomings... come on, really? The story moves at lightning speed, with no unnecessary or dragged-out parts – it's all so engaging that you can't help but get swept up in it!

Stardust by Neil GaimanTristram meets all sorts of creatures on his journey to the fallen star, and it's a girl named Ivey who turns out to be the star itself. It's funny that the movie was made exactly like the book, and I barely noticed any differences, except for the ending.

Speaking of the ending, knowing Neil Gaiman's style, I was worried that he'd make it some sad, cruel, or dark conclusion, but to my surprise, it ended on a happy note, not exactly like the movie, but with a similar message.

Stardust by Neil GaimanYou'll come across some pretty gruesome stuff in this book, like a witch killing a unicorn - it's all a bit too graphic and detailed for my taste, but I didn't cringe or anything, because I'm familiar with the author and knew what to expect. I'll rip out your eyes and tie one to a herring, and the other to a gull, so you'll be driven mad by seeing both the sky and the sea at once!

It's actually a beautiful and enchanting fairy tale, but only for adults! I don't get why people recommend this book to kids... have you actually read it all the way through, or just between the lines?)

Stardust by Neil GaimanThere are some hilarious moments where the main characters just get lucky and manage to escape their enemies, only to find themselves floating on a cloud! Or how Tristran was helped by a tree‘Well,’ said Tristran, ‘I don’t know how you looked as a nymph, madam, but the tree made you look absolutely stunning.’

It all looks a bit too childish at first glance, and I'm not sure I would have been impressed if I hadn't seen the movie first - there's just so much 'weird' and illogical stuff going on, it's almost...breathless. But it was fun, because this is a world of magic and fantasy, where witches and elves, ghosts and sorcerers live, and any old worm could be a enchanted prince, and a bird in a cage could be a princess.

‘I'll be free again on the day the moon loses its daughter, if that happens on a week when two Mondays coincide. I've been waiting patiently for that day.’

Stardust by Neil GaimanThe only thing that left me a bit disappointed was the romance, it just didn't have enough time to develop, because the reader doesn't get to see the characters grow on each other, and the sparks fly, and the book is over before you know it... In the movie, it's all so beautifully done, you can't help but get swept up in it, and you immediately know who Tristran's True love is, but in the book, it's just...missing.

Stardust by Neil GaimanAfter finishing the book, I felt like I was transported back in time and relived the whole experience all over again, just like when I first saw the 2007 movie - it was such a pleasure to relive it all in my head!

This is a fantastic fantasy with a wonderful world and none of the descriptions dragging on - Neil Gaiman's writing is just incredible! After reading this book, I even thought about giving the author another chance and reading more of his work

Neil Gaiman's Stardust I've got to say, I'm really glad I read this book - it's an amazing fantasy story that won't take up too much of your time, and the movie adaptation is pretty great too! The acting is top-notch. Even in a dark world, there are still some good people out there. Thanks for reading!-----------------------------

A Book that Could Mess with Your Head - Not in a Good Way

A psychological thriller that'll keep you guessing, but not in a good way. Unpredictable plot, complex characters, and themes that'll make you question reality.
