My Tvil Booking Experience: A Cautionary Tale

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been using Tvil for a while now, and my latest experience was a real eye-opener. I tried to cancel my booking, but they only returned the advance payment in Tvil rubles, which I could supposedly use for future bookings. The catch? 100% of the booking payment can't be made using Tvil rubles. You can only use them to pay the commission, which is a maximum of 80% of the total. The remaining 15-20% always gets charged to your card, and they never return it. This time, I encountered a situation that left me speechless. The landlord called me and asked me to cancel the booking because their heating system broke down and they wouldn't be able to fix it before our arrival. They offered a replacement, but it didn't meet our requirements. I was pretty disappointed with the whole experience, and I'm sharing it with you so you can be aware of the potential issues.

My Tvil Booking Experience: A Cautionary Tale
Tvil's administration was aware of this force majeure, but they still found a way to screw me over.
I asked them to return the license fee. The Tvil commission was 12 rubles, and I wanted to pay it using Tvil rubles, which I had 14 rubles of (I got them as an invite bonus). In my case, Tvil only allowed me to pay 10 rubles using Tvil rubles, and the remaining 2 rubles were transferred from my card. This always happens - when I cancel a booking, they return the full amount, but in Tvil rubles.
Their loyalty policy states:
8. Special conditions for canceling bookings
The purpose of the loyalty policy is to create an emotional sense of exclusivity for the user by providing special perks.
However, if the landlord offers a different accommodation at check-in that doesn't match the information in the ad, or refuses to let us stay in the booked accommodation, the administration will return the license fee within 5 working days.
But they're ignoring their own rules, which says a lot. It's clear that they're more interested in making money off of us than in providing good customer service.
The license fee is simply a hidden fee for using their app - genius. And to make matters worse, many Tvil reviews are paid for.
Everything's fine if there's no cancellation. But what about unexpected situations? This time, it wasn't even our fault.
This is probably the last time I'll book through their app. I couldn't even get in touch with them - their auto-answering machine was unhelpful, and I had to find their phone number on a third-party resource. You can only contact them via email, and they'll just send you a standard response saying you agreed to pay for using their app.
Stay away from them - there are many other loyal services for booking accommodations that don't try to screw you over.
Why You Should Avoid Tvil
Hidden fees: Tvil charges a license fee for using their app, which is not clearly disclosed. Unfair cancellation policies: Tvil's loyalty policy is designed to create an emotional sense of exclusivity, but it's not fair to users who encounter unexpected situations. Poor customer service: I couldn't get in touch with Tvil's administration, and their auto-answering machine was unhelpful. Paid reviews: Many Tvil reviews are paid for, which is a red flag for any booking service.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend using Tvil for booking accommodations. There are many other loyal services available that are more transparent and customer-friendly.
