My Hair Nightmare: The Struggle is Real

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've spent my whole life dealing with a hairdo that's more hassle than it's worth. I've tried every style under the sun, but nothing seems to stick. It's like my hair has a mind of its own, and I'm just along for the ride. I've learned to adapt, but it's a constant battle to keep it looking decent. I've had to deal with frizz, bad cuts, and the struggle to style it in the morning. It's a never-ending cycle, but I'm determined to find a solution. I've come to realize that my hair type is the main culprit behind all my hair woes. I've got a mix of fine and curly hair, which makes it hard to find a style that works for me. I've tried using different products, but nothing seems to give me the results I want. I've also had to deal with the frustration of bad haircuts, which can be really discouraging. Despite all the struggles, I'm not giving up. I'm determined to find a hairstyle that works for me and my hair type.

I've always had a love-hate relationship with my hair. It's like it has a mind of its own, and I'm just along for the ride.
My hair's natural texture is a bit of a handful. It's not straight, it's not curly - it's just a whole lot of hassle!
I've tried every hairstyle under the sun, but none of them have ever worked out for long. This review's all about my journey, and maybe someone out there's struggling with similar hair woes...
My hair started to frizz at the ends when I was around 10. As a kid, I had a decent, non-frizzy mane. I always went for short haircuts, as my mom was against me growing my hair out, thinking I wouldn't take care of it. So, my dream was to grow my hair out.
But when I turned 12 and finally grew it out...
I wanted to cut it all off again. Not because it was unmanageable or hard to style, but because I wanted a new look. I got a 'bob' haircut, also known as the 'mop top' style.
My hair was down to my shoulders, and I chopped it all off - no regrets!
That style was convenient, no fuss, no muss. I'd wake up, run a comb through my hair, and I was good to go.
One time, when I went to get a trim...
they cut it even shorter than the picture above, right down to the scalp. I was mortified!
I'd been stressing about it for ages, it looked awful, and everyone thought I was a boy. That was infuriating.
In the end, I regretted cutting my hair short and started growing it back out to regain my femininity. That's when all my dreams of having long hair came true again.
Voice of experience, here's how my hair grew back:
My hair was growing below my shoulders somewhere around a year ago. I was absolutely thrilled and didn't plan on getting them cut short again.
I wasn't planning on waiting a year, two years, three... But then I wanted something new again, and I got tired of dealing with constant tangles and split ends. I didn't know how to style my hair.
So, I decided to go for a kind of messy cut. Inspired by anime hairstyles. I thought it would be a cool, modern look. I didn't feel bad about my hair, but I started to feel sorry for it after...
Looking back, it was a complete mess that didn't suit me at all. All these stray ends, no shape, just a hot mess on my head.
Hair was getting in the way, poking me in the face, and I was just gathering it up in a pathetic ponytail, which looked even worse:
I have to admit, this haircut was a total disaster for me. It looked ridiculous on my hair, messy, and I had no idea how to take care of it... and then I did the unthinkable...
Hi, 50-year-old auntie
Check out those stray ends? And this is even after I tried to style my hair... If I'm being honest, I was completely clueless back then.
After realizing that a bob wasn't for me either I started growing my hair out again. And I grew it out, below my shoulders, but the story of my haircuts didn't end there...
PLUS, I finally got rid of the bangs I loved so much. I grew them out and, in my opinion, looked younger.
Of course, weight loss played a role too - I lost almost 20 kg - but I think the bangs were also aging me.
Photo from 2017.
My hair was long, but totally dead. I hadn't been taking care of it at all - no conditioners, masks, or oils. I needed it that length for my wedding hairstyle, and after that, I was ready to chop it off.
I didn't see the point in keeping long, dead hair, so I cut it all off again.
Here's a photo right after I left the salon.
As you can see, the styling looks amazing, and I've been trying my best to learn how to style my hair.
A little while later, I decided to take the risk again and cut it to this length. The stylist did an amazing job with the styling, and I was blown away by how great my hair looked with the right products! It's shiny, soft, and healthy-looking.
I've been using hair masks, oils, and conditioners every day since that cut.
Without the fringe, a short haircut doesn't look as aged, and styling is a bit easier.
I'm doing my best to keep it looking good!
I'm thinking of growing my hair back out or just keeping it at this length – something in between.
If I style my hair, the cut just below the shoulders looks pretty neat on my hair, I guess.
I don't think I'll be cutting myself in the near future:
So, what have I learned from all my haircuts?
1. I'm leaving super short haircuts for when I'm 50+. I've already tried being a 'boy' cut and it didn't work out for me. I want to at least look feminine.
2. The bob on my hair required constant maintenance and styling, or else it looked really bad. In the end, it wasn't my thing. My hair was getting in the way, and it was hard to put it up in a ponytail.
3. The choppy cut also looked good only when styled, without it, it just looked like I had a chicken's head sticking out in all directions – not neat at all. If I had straight hair, I think it would've been different. I'm not risking it again.
It also looks ridiculous when I put it up in a ponytail.
4. I'm happy with the medium-length cut with a straight finish. It doesn't require too much upkeep, and I can always put my hair up in a ponytail or a bun.
I hope my experience with experimenting with unruly hair is helpful to you:
Honestly, almost all my haircuts have been a disaster, so I'm giving it a three out of five.
