My Mitsubishi Lancer 9 Experience: A Practical Ride for Women

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a 21-year-old woman who's been driving since I got my license at 20. I've owned a budget-friendly Matiz, but after six months of reliability issues, I splurged on a Mitsubishi Lancer 9. I chose this car over the Peugeot and Hyundai Accent because of its automatic transmission and better clearance. With the Lancer, I've found a reliable and comfortable ride that's perfect for city driving. However, I do wish it had more storage space and a better infotainment system. The Lancer's automatic transmission makes driving a breeze, even in heavy traffic, and the car's clearance is great for navigating kerbs and potholes. I love the comfortable seats and ample legroom, and the Lancer's fuel efficiency is impressive, especially for an automatic. The car's exterior design is sleek and modern, making it a head-turner, and I appreciate the Lancer's safety features, including airbags and anti-lock brakes. But the Lancer's infotainment system is a bit outdated and lacks modern features, and the car's storage space is limited, making it difficult to fit large items.

Hello everyone!
I've been dreaming of getting my driver's license and owning my own car since I was 17. Finally, at 20, I got my license, and at 21, I bought my first car, a Matiz. It was a tiny, feminine car perfect for navigating city driving's ups and downs. However, the car wasn't super reliable, and after six months, I started thinking about buying a new one.
Since I only got my license for an automatic transmission, I knew I'd never be comfortable with a manual. Driving an automatic in the city is a total breeze, even when stuck in traffic. I'm not a fan of driving a manual, to be honest.
After my budget-friendly Matiz, I splurged on a car that's twice as expensive. I hoped it would be more reliable and wouldn't break down every week. I considered the Peugeot, Hyundai Accent, and Mitsubishi Lancer, but ultimately chose the Lancer. The Peugeot's electronics are a bit too complicated, and its low clearance can't handle a kerb. The Hyundai is a solid car with a great automatic transmission, but it's not the most visually appealing. So, I went with the Lancer, a 2005 model.

I chose a weird, almost-not-red color they call 'plum' instead of black or red.

Despite being 12 years old, the car still looks pretty great. You wouldn't even notice it's an older model.
Inside, there's plenty of space – way more than I was used to in my previous car.

The dashboard is super comfy, and there are all these buttons for the aircon, rear window heater, heated seats, and more.
One thing I don't like about this car is its size. It's a bit bigger than I'm used to, and I often feel like I'm not fully aware of my surroundings, especially on the right side. But, I guess that's just personal preference. Some women I know drive big SUVs and feel perfectly comfortable, while others swear by their Matiz or Chevrolet Spark.
After half a year, the new suspension system started to deteriorate and needed a lot of repairs.
The steering rack started to leak. Apparently, this is a common issue with this model, and it starts to happen around 100,000 kilometers. You can either fix or replace it, but either way, it's going to cost you a pretty penny.
The fuel pump gave out on me. It just stopped working, and I was left stranded in the middle of the road. Luckily, the service team was able to fix it quickly.
One of the best things about this car is its affordability. Compared to other cars on the market, the Lancer is relatively affordable, even if it's not the cheapest option. Of course, the price depends on the year of manufacture, but I think it's more about the build quality, country of origin, and the car's overall condition. And let's be honest, the year of manufacture doesn't always tell the whole story.
There are plenty of aftermarket parts available online, which makes repairs a lot cheaper. You just have to be willing to wait a bit for the analogues to arrive.
The standard ground clearance is decent. I wouldn't say the car is low to the ground, but it can handle a medium-sized curb without scraping the underside, and it's not too bad on dirt roads either.
I really like the interior design. It's simple, yet functional, and everything you need is within easy reach.
All things considered, I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a similar price range. Just keep in mind that buying a used car always comes with some risks, and you might need to spend some money to get it running smoothly.
