Specifications
Last fall, we visited the beautiful city of Kazan and took a trip to the stunning Svijazhsk Island. This excursion left us with the warmest impressions and is still remembered.
Getting There
By car. We simply called a taxi, and from Kazan, the taxi cost 1,500 rubles. On the way back, this option didn't work out for us because we were walking until evening and just couldn't call a taxi.
Bus and train. It was exactly this way that we left the island to return to Kazan. We were lucky, the bus was leaving and they called us, saying that the bus was approaching just as the train was arriving, which would easily take us to Kazan. It was significantly cheaper, but took much longer.
Excursion bus. During our stay on the island, a significant number of excursion buses arrived. Later, on the website, I saw that the cost of the trip was 1,500 rubles (there and back). One of the minuses was that the passengers of these buses were constantly in a hurry, rushing to museums and cafes, afraid of being late. For me, this was uncomfortable, as I wanted to enjoy the walk quietly.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsEntry
Entry to the island is free. So, you can simply come and walk around without visiting museums.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThere are many museums and exhibition displays on the island, and you can buy a comprehensive ticket. But we decided that it's impossible to cover everything in one go. So, we bought a ticket for two museums - the history museum and the archaeological one, which was more than enough for getting familiar with them.
The cost of one ticket is 650 rubles.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsIslandWe were there at the end of October, and there were quite a lot of tourists on the island. As we were told, this number is nowhere near the summer season, but still a lot. There were a lot of schoolchildren, apparently, they had included a visit to the island in their school excursion program before the autumn holidays.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsI'd like to note that at this time, it was very picturesque, with yellow leaves. But also, there were a lot of blooming roses and other flowers. I can imagine how beautiful it must be in the summer.
The island is surrounded by rivers, but overall, it wasn't cold, although I was worried that I'd freeze at the end of October.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThe island is small, and it's not difficult to walk around it, back and forth, which is what we did. But it's so cozy, and it's nice to walk around it.
One of the standout features of the island is its historic churches and cathedrals, dating back to the 16th century. The Uspensky Cathedral is a great example. We didn't venture inside, but strolled around the courtyard, and it's just lovely – a beautiful garden, plenty of benches to sit and take a break.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThere are plenty of signs pointing to the various attractions, and all the excursion points are clearly labeled.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThe entire island is immaculately maintained, with plenty of greenery.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThe paths leading to each attraction are well-maintained, with manicured lawns and trimmed bushes.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsAlongside the historical landmarks, the island also has residential areas, and the architecture blends in nicely. The estates are quite charming.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsAs for the restrooms, I don't recall seeing any, but I wasn't exactly looking for them either. You can find them in the museums and cafes.
Where to Eat?
There's a full-fledged restaurant called 'Tрактир' (we had lunch there), and about three cafes. The restaurant serves decent food, and their signature fish soup (made with local fish) is a must-try – it's reasonably priced.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsAs for street vendors, it was surprisingly scarce – barely any drinks or pastries were available.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsWe did find some glühwein and herbal tea on the horse stable grounds.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsThere are some shops, mostly non-chain stores. You can buy local chak-chak (it's everywhere on the island) – our kids loved it, and it's probably because it was freshly delivered, but these miniature pyramids were a hit.
Museums
We visited the Sviyazhsk History Museum. I found it really interesting to see how the island's appearance changed over the centuries.
Svijazhsk Island reviewsYou can learn about the main attractions and, you know, the famous landmarks of Sviyazhsk.
Svijazhsk Island ReviewsI was really impressed by the craftsmanship and artisans on the island. It's amazing to see how people used to live here.
Svijazhsk Island ReviewsThe museums have tons of interactive exhibits and objects, but they also have ancient manuscripts and artifacts on display.
Svijazhsk Island ReviewsThe second museum blew me away. There are glass walkways everywhere, and you can see the actual archaeological digs and restored fragments below. It's really impressive.
Svijazhsk Island ReviewsThey show how wooden architecture developed, with scale models of buildings and a ton of focus on woodworking and tools. It's ridiculously interesting and addictive.
Svijazhsk Island ReviewsThe Verdict
Svijazhsk Island left a really great impression on me. It's a stunningly beautiful place perfect for leisurely strolls, and an amazing spot to learn about history.
I highly recommend it!
Thanks for reading my review! Wishing you all the best!
