My Major Disappointment with Michael's Book

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm usually a sucker for psychology books, but Michael's offering left me underwhelmed. I thought the unique format and soft cover would be a game-changer, but the content failed to impress. As someone who's read a ton of psychology texts, I was expecting something more insightful. Unfortunately, this book didn't deliver. The unconventional format, which I thought would be a total game-changer, turned out to be a total letdown. The book's size and thickness make it a great conversation starter, but that's about it. The author's writing style is engaging, but it's not enough to save the book. The content is lacking in insight and fails to deliver on its promises. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking read.

I've always had a bit of a skeptical view of psychologists, but I love reading about psychology. I often buy books on this topic, but I usually end up reselling them because I don't find anything particularly insightful. Michael's book had caught my eye for a long time, but I couldn't bring myself to buy it, mainly because most of the reviews were negative. Still, it just wouldn't leave my head, and one day I finally bought it. Maybe I shouldn't have...
There are two formats available for the book: a small one that fits in a lady's purse, and a rather unconventional one.
I have the unconventional one.
Despite the book being quite large and thick, I actually like it.
The cover is soft, and it also serves as bookmarks on both sides.
The font is quite large, and the chapters are short – around 1-3 pages. I'm actually more impressed with the book's design than I can list its pros.
The book has several chapters in the content.
And all of them are marked with illustrations.
The author proposes six life rules:
1. Do only what you want.
2. Don't do what you don't want to do.
3. Speak up about what you don't like right away.
4. Don't respond when you're not asked.
5. Answer only the question.
6. When resolving conflicts, only talk about yourself.
I have to admit, the book's written in plain language, but the underlying message just doesn't resonate with me. To me, it's like the author's saying, 'Just go ahead and dump on everyone, and success will come your way.' Even the author himself notes in the book that many people disagree with his hypothesis, and I'm one of them.
But let's be real - sometimes you just have to adapt to someone else's needs, even if it's not your cup of tea. And Michael advises just telling people what you don't like, and if they're not willing to do things your way, then kick them to the curb.
The author covers all the important topics - relationships, raising kids, and personal growth - but he does it in a pretty superficial way. In one chapter, you might get one decent piece of advice on how to handle a situation, but then it's just a bunch of fluff. And even when I do agree with something, it's not like I need a psychologist to tell me that.
On the surface, the book looks well-organized, with articles, examples, and key takeaways highlighted. But after reading it, I didn't find a single useful piece of advice.
Honestly, I was ready to give up on it by page 17. To me, the whole thing is just a bunch of nonsense, and I'm not impressed with its fans. For me, this book is a total waste of time.
Take, for example, the advice to tell your partner (in this case, your husband) that you don't like it when he comes home late. And if he's not willing to change his ways, then you should just pack up your bags and leave him. If everyone followed that advice, we'd have no families, and no relationships at all.
To me, the book is shallow. The chapters are short and don't really get to the heart of the issue. And even when there is advice, it's either ridiculous or unrealistic.
I have to say, the Q&A section in this book wasn't always clear. It felt like Michael was just attacking the customer instead of helping them figure out what was going on. Like, it was our fault or something.
The Verdict. Before buying this book, I was actually following Michael's group for a bit. I thought his advice was pretty good, and it made me want to buy the book. But I didn't find much of that advice in the book itself. So, if you're thinking of buying, I'd say check out his videos first. That way, you can see him being his usual, no-nonsense self. He's not afraid to call people out for being lazy or whatever. It's like having a strict parent who's never going to give you a break. Sure, he says some things that are actually right, but in real life, they don't really work.
Go read his articles or watch the Q&A sessions. He doesn't charge for access, so you can check it out and decide if you need his advice. I'm definitely not going to be seeking him out for therapy or anything.
