The Disappointing Live-Action 'Prostokvashino' - A Messy Adaptation

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really looking forward to the 2026 live-action adaptation of 'Prostokvashino', but unfortunately, it's a messy take on the classic Soviet cartoon. The film tries to capture the spirit of the original, but it ends up feeling like a cheap imitation. The cast doesn't quite deliver, and the dialogue feels forced. The plot, while familiar, is engaging enough to keep you interested, but it's not enough to save the movie from its overall lackluster feel. With a runtime of 1 hour and 45 minutes, it's a decent effort, but it's not worth the hype. I was expecting a lot more from this adaptation, but it falls short in many areas. The film's atmosphere is reminiscent of the original cartoon, which is a nice touch, but it's not enough to make up for the rest of the movie's shortcomings.

Hello everyone!
I finally got around to reviewing the 2026 film 'Prostokvashino' by director Sarik Andriasyan. It's been a while coming, but I'm excited to share my thoughts on this live-action adaptation of a classic Soviet cartoon.
General info:
Genre: Family, Adventure;Rating: 6+;Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes;Release date: January 1, 2026.Let me give you the lowdown on the film's plot. Meet a boy known as Uncle Fyodor, who's a huge animal lover but faces opposition from his parents. So, Uncle Fyodor and his new pals - a mischievous cat named Matroskin and a loyal dog named Sharik - set off for the village of Prostokvashino.
The plot may not be entirely new, but that's what makes it work. I was excited to see the classic cartoon brought to life in a live-action film, rather than being animated. But can they pull it off, or even surpass the original?
I've got a soft spot for the original Soviet cartoon 'Prostokvashino' from my childhood. I still remember it vividly. When I heard about the new live-action film with the same name, I was immediately intrigued.
The film combines 'Three from Prostokvashino' and 'Holidays in Prostokvashino' into one story, which leads to some inconsistencies and questions.
I'm not going to summarize the plot, as I think most people already know it, and this is a review, not a recap. I'll just share what I personally liked and didn't like.
First, the good stuff: just look at these incredible landscapes, buildings, the city, and the village of Prostokvashino! You can't take your eyes off them - they're stunning!
The background music is unobtrusive, with some old songs that might not be entirely on theme, but they don't grate on my ears. Plus, the familiar music from the Soviet cartoon is instantly nostalgic. Honestly, after watching this, I felt like re-watching my favorite series of Prostokvashino cartoons, which I ended up doing.
Now, let's talk about the acting, characters... Of the actors I'm familiar with, only two are here, and I'm not familiar with the rest.
Dad – Roman Pankov. I've got to say, this movie is a total disaster. The character feels like a cardboard cutout, trying to deliver these rehearsed lines with a tone that's just cringeworthy. It's like watching a robot move. I remember him being a lively, interesting kid in the animated series – smart and mature for his age. But here, I have no idea what's going on.
Dad's mom – Lisa Moriya. This is even worse. I mean, I get it, the kid's acting is subpar, but an adult woman should be able to do better. I'm shocked. The character is completely emotionless – I don't think I've ever seen her smile in the whole movie. In the animated series, she's a bit over-the-top, but at least she's relatable. Here, it's just... nothing.
Papa Dyadya Fyodor - Pavel Priluchny. To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed by his character. I've seen him in other projects and he's usually pretty solid. Here, though, he's just a total pushover. His character is supposed to be this tough guy, but he's just too afraid to speak up to his wife. It's like, come on, dude, you're a grown man, stand up for yourself! I remember watching the cartoon and thinking his character was this calm, philosophical guy, but in this live-action version, he's just a total wimp.
I've got to say, both parents were completely unmoved by their kid's disappearance. Not a single tear was shed, not even a flicker of concern. They didn't even bat an eye, just calmly went about their day, seemingly more interested in getting to the beach than finding their missing child. And get this - they actually went to the police station in Sochi and filed a report, even though their kid went missing in Moscow. That's it, really. The movie's portrayal of the parents is way more emotional than the real-life situation. I mean, the animation was more convincing in terms of emotional depth than the actual people in the film.
The police officers, trying to crack jokes with their accents, were the ones that really grated on me. The scenes with them were a total turn-off.
Почтальон Печкин - Иван Охлобыстин. He's the one who most closely resembles his cartoon counterpart. If I'm being picky, though, I wish they'd done a better job with his mustache - it looks like they just slapped some glue on it. But his voice in the cartoon was actually a lot softer and more pleasant than in this live-action version.
Shark, Matroskin, Galchonok really stood out from the rest of the pack, and I have to wonder why these characters couldn't have been done more realistically in the movie. It's like I'm watching a cartoon, and I don't believe these animals are real. In the animated film, everything looked organic because it was all hand-drawn, but now we have the technology to make animated characters look more lifelike. Unfortunately, these guys look pretty weak. However, I did enjoy the voice acting - the voices are close to the originals, and I'd like to thank Anton Tabakov, Pavel Derevyanko, and Darya Blokhina for their work. Shark, being the stray cat he is, looks like a typical street dog. Matroskin, on the other hand, is more of a lazy cat with "paws" rather than a smart and hardworking one.
There were some minor characters that didn't get much screen time:
the EMT team.
the neighbor who asked the kids to watch her cow while she was away.
I was surprised to see a cow, and then her calf. They're cute, but they definitely don't fit in with the rest of the characters.
Other residents from different villages with the same name 'Prostokvashino' also make an appearance.
Another neighbor, Professor Orlov's wife, Tatyana Orlova, shows up. Unfortunately, she's a pretty boring character, and her style is just plain weird - that hairdo, those glasses, her behavior...
The train conductor, Marina Fedunkiv, tries to flirt with my dad, Uncle Fedor. It's pretty awkward. And then she drops this bombshell:
— Your tea's as cold as your wife, and as unsweet as she is. Good luck with that!
I've got to say, that's a pretty accurate assessment of his wife's personality.
I was really disappointed with how all the characters looked. It's just awful. They all have these ridiculous wigs, outfits, and huge glasses – it's like they're trying to be funny or something. And why does the house look like a dump? I mean, I know the kids are gone, but you'd think the parents would've cleaned up a bit. It's like they just gave up.
Even the few things I liked about it couldn't make up for the terrible acting. I mean, acting is the heart of any movie, and this one's got nothing. My rating's 1⭐️ out of 5⭐️. In my opinion, there are already some great Soviet cartoons about Prostokvashino that are way more enjoyable to watch now than this. Plus, there are new series coming out that are actually pretty good – but this one's just a mess.
Is the 2026 Buratino movie worth your time and attention?
I thought that was the end of the movie, but nope! It's getting a sequel this winter! What a relief! Although, let's hope for the best, right?
