The Litter Kwitter Adventure: Training My Cat to Use the Toilet

I was inspired by someone who successfully trained their cat to use a toilet, and I thought, why not give it a try? It's amazing to know that you can leave for a few days and be sure your cat will use the toilet without any litter box cleaning or replacement.

Since I wanted to save some money, I decided to order the Litter Kwitter training kit for cats on Avito. The price of Litter Kitter ranges from 3 to 4 thousand rubles, which is a pretty good value for money.

The set includes four Litter Kwitter inserts in different colors, a training DVD, and a package. My kit didn't come with boxes, but all the inserts and the training DVD were available.

My cat, an Oriental cat with a rather complicated character, is a whole chapter on its own. You never know what they'll like or dislike, but I still decided to give it a try.

The Litter Kwitter dimensions are 40x40x7 cm, and the weight (with packaging) is 1.3 kg. I was surprised to find that the toilet shape plays a minor role in using this gadget.

The Litter Kwitter shape is more like an old, widely used toilet shape. I have a new toilet with a shape closer to a rectangle than an oval, but I still managed to put the Litter Kwitter system on the toilet during the first trial.

My cat was absolutely fascinated by the new toy and sniffed it all over, walked around it, and even climbed onto the toilet to try it out.

I put the system to the test and followed the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. First, I placed the Litter Kwitter with the red solid insert and litter near the toilet, just like a regular litter box. Once my cat got used to it, I moved it to the toilet itself. As the instructions suggested, I swapped the red insert for a yellow one with a small hole and a minimal amount of litter.

According to the manufacturer's instructions, here's how to proceed with the Red stage:

In some cases, you can try locking your cat in the bathroom at night to help it get accustomed to using the litter box there. Once your cat has mastered the Litter Kwitter for a week, you can move on to the next stage: teaching it to jump onto the toilet.

I was particularly amused by step 5, where the manufacturer recommends locking your cat in the bathroom. I'm not sure if they've ever had to deal with a cat owner's sanity... My cat would go ballistic if I tried that, and I'd have to call in a SWAT team to calm it down.

We stalled on the Red stage, to be honest.

It all came down to our cat just doing its business right next to the toilet.

More specifically, it would start meowing, and then I'd come, only to find a mess on the floor. This went on for a few days before we collectively decided to put the litter box back where it belonged.

We recommend starting training for cats over 3 months old, as they'll be able to balance on the toilet lid by then. Make sure your cat is used to using a regular litter box. This is crucial, as we'll be building on this skill when using the Litter Kwitter. If your cat isn't already litter-trained, don't worry – it's easy to do with the Litter Kwitter. If you have multiple cats, we recommend using separate systems for each cat, so they can go through the training program individually. If this isn't possible, it's essential to train them to use the same litter box, so they get used to it. In this case, the stages of potty training will depend on the progress of the less capable student. And finally, the most important thing. Please, do be patient and keep a sense of humor. You're both embarking on a journey to make your home cleaner and safer for everyone. Don't rush your cat! We recommend giving each stage at least 2-3 weeks.

Only, my cat still insists on doing his business right next to me on the floor if the litter is fresh – a problem that's been going on for a year now and persists even after trying to train him to use the toilet.

I'd say go for it if you've got a young cat that's still open to trying new things. I wouldn't bother with older cats or those that are set in their ways, trust me I've tried it on my own cat!
