A Turkish Drama That's Refreshingly Realistic

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was blown away by 'Life Goes On', a Turkish drama that finally delivers a realistic portrayal of life in a conservative family. The show's dark and twisted storyline had me hooked, but it's the characters that truly shine. Hayat, the 15-year-old protagonist, is a complex and relatable character that you can't help but root for. With its unique storyline and professional acting, 'Life Goes On' is a must-watch for anyone looking for a more realistic Turkish drama. But be warned, the show tackles some tough subjects, including pedophilia and marriage to an elderly man. The show's portrayal of these sensitive topics is realistic and respectful, making it a thought-provoking watch. I appreciated how the show didn't shy away from tackling difficult subjects, even if it was uncomfortable at times. Overall, 'Life Goes On' is a gripping and authentic drama that's definitely worth watching.

I've had it up to here with over-the-top Turkish dramas that portray every character as a millionaire with a private jet and a mansion. I'm looking for something more down-to-earth, more relatable, and more realistic. That's when I stumbled upon 'Life Goes On'. The visuals and storyline immediately caught my attention, but I had no idea it would be as dark, as twisted, and as uncomfortable as it was.
What's the show about?
Hayat, a 15-year-old girl, falls in love with a down-to-earth guy named Kerim. She's from a super conservative family, and her life is supposed to be dictated by strict rules. But Hayat makes a mistake by falling in love with Kerim before marriage, which is a huge no-no. Luckily, or unluckily, she meets an 80-year-old man named Abbas, who falls for her at first sight and marries her without knowing about her past transgression.
What I loved about it?
1) Realism
I'm tired of Turkish dramas that glorify wealth and luxury. It's like every single character is a millionaire with a yacht. This show, on the other hand, is raw and realistic. It shows a big family struggling to make ends meet. The kids need new shoes, but the family can't afford them. This portrayal is honest and refreshing.
Families like this do exist, and they might still exist today. I've seen firsthand how the women are expected to manage the household, wear modest clothing, and take care of the kids. They're always cooking, cleaning, and looking after the children.
It shows a big family eating on the floor with meager food. They have to fight over who gets the smallest piece of chicken - who's worked harder and who deserves it.
Living in a traditional household, I've seen how the women are expected to manage the household, wear modest clothing, and take care of the kids. They're always cooking, cleaning, and looking after the children.
At first, I thought Kudret was the evil mother-in-law, but it turned out she's the first wife of the guy.
Yes, this show has two wives - the older wife is actually the daughter of the guy's uncle, who was married to him as a form of arranged marriage.
The second wife, Jenet, is the one the father genuinely loves.
It's no secret that in many Muslim countries, marrying relatives is still a common practice. It's seen as a blessing in Arabic culture, and it's been passed down to other nations as well. To me, it's disgusting, but for them, it's just normal.
In the show, this is portrayed in a believable and subtle way.
2) Unconventional storyline
The concept of 'sinning before marriage' is not something that's explored much in Turkish culture. It's rare to see someone take the risk and show it on screen. We're all human beings living on the same planet, and it's 2026, but still, it's customary to focus on the theme of innocence in every show. This show takes a different approach. The girl falls in love, takes the leap - that's the first shock. The second shock is that she's only 15 years old! The storyline caught me off guard.
I've seen some pretty dodgy arranged marriages in my time, but this one takes the cake - or should I say, the shame. It's like they're trying to cover up a scandal by marrying off the daughter to some old, nasty guy.
3) The acting
The cast is pretty good, but I've got a few issues with some of the performances. First off, Abbas - sorry, but he's just awful. He's huge, wrinkly, old, and just plain nasty.
I have no idea how old Abbas is supposed to be, but he looks at least 80 years old. His first wife, Kadriye, looks more like his mom than his wife.
I would've replaced him with someone a bit more pleasant. The aftertaste of him touching Hayat is just plain nasty.
The sister of Hayat in the show is Shirin, played by the young Neslihan Atagul.
I would've swapped the girls around. In my opinion, Shirin looks way more free-spirited. I would've believed she was the kind of girl who'd go off the deep end.
But Hayat looks way too conservative and unbelievable for such a bold move. I'm not judging, it's just my opinion.
WHAT DIDN'T IMPRESS ME?
1) The cinematography
I've been watching a lot of Turkish dramas lately, and I have to say, this one was a letdown. It was shot from 2011 to 2013, around the same time as 'Magnificent Century'. I don't get why the latter was so professionally done, with great lighting and all the right camera angles. 'Life Goes On' feels like it was made decades ago. The cinematography is subpar, and the translation is clunky and uninteresting. It's 2011, not 1981 - why couldn't they have invested in a good cameraman?
Now, I know the Turkish version is fine, but I only watched the Russian dubbed version, and that's where things went wrong. The dubbing is really bad and takes away from the viewing experience.
2) Unrealistic moments
I'm not sure if it's common in conservative families to constantly swear at each other, but the main character Kudret is always using profanity. I get that she's angry and upset, but there's a limit to how much you can take. She's not afraid to yell at her husband, which is not exactly the most appealing thing to watch. In families like this, women are expected to smile and avoid conflict, but here, Kudret's behavior is just too much.
I also don't get why Haya didn't just leave her husband and start a new life.
And in this show, every time something goes wrong, they just grab a gun. Where do they even get these guns from? It's like they're living in the Wild West or something.
This is just ridiculous - it's like they're in the US or something, where you can just walk into a store and buy a gun. It's just not believable.
3) The wedding night
I have to say, after watching that scene, I just wanted to take a shower, cry, and maybe even talk to a therapist. It's honestly the worst thing I've ever seen! I've never seen a love scene that bad, except maybe in a really low-budget horror movie.
I'm still in shock, to be honest, about how they decided to show the entire process in that scene. It's just really gross. I felt bad for both the actress and the character she was playing.
The show is really good, though. There's a lot of interesting stuff in it. They focus on Hayat in the first few episodes, and then they start to develop the other characters' personalities. Overall, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. The storyline is unique, the acting is professional, and it's just really interesting to see how the story unfolds. But, yeah, that one scene was pretty messed up.
