I recently stumbled upon a collection of works by Leonid Filatov, and I was hooked from the very start. I fell for him like a 19th-century Turgenev heroine. Not only is he a talented actor, but he's also a poet whose work should be included in school curricula.
The lyrics are so vivid, funny, and full of humor – I've never read anything like it. It's both captivating and touching, and I found myself smiling with pleasure as I read through the story.
The story seems to have been written a long time ago, but its relevance is still off the charts. It's a serious story about the situation in the country, disguised as a bright, fairy-tale-like story with a rural accent.
As you read, you can't help but feel a mix of emotions – it's such a good fairy tale... until you reach the end and it hits you: this isn't just fiction. You start thinking about the text, drawing parallels, and re-reading it again.
The main character, Fedot the archer, is a great guy. He's a simple Russian guy who's been pushed around by the tsars, generals, and other 'gentlemen.' He just does what he's told to do – that's his job.
And with each new order, things just get more and more absurd. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
Along the way, Fedot gets into all sorts of adventures. He meets a cast of characters who are all incredibly well-developed in terms of their personalities, thought processes, and character traits.
It's lucky that one of these adventures led him to a wife. Fedka boldly and roughly took himself a beautiful wife, Marusya. She's a skilled woman and a loyal companion, the kind who'd stand by her loved one even if the whole world was against him – and provide him with ammo, to boot!
Together, they take on the self-absorbed old tsar, the cunning general, and Baba Yaga. The story is full of action, drama, and humor, making it an engaging and entertaining read.
Incidentally, the tsar may be an old man, but he's got the same kind of lust and spite as a young man. He exiled Fedot to the ends of the earth, and then crawled to his wife, offering her love and affection!
To be honest, the story of Fedot left me wanting to read the book itself to find out how it all ended and how long the poor guy had to put up with the tsar's nonsense.
I had a good laugh, then I felt a pang of sadness, and before I knew it, I was rushing to WB to order the paperback version. I wish I had it with me at all times.
The characters' charisma is off the charts. Fedot, Marusya, the Tsar, and especially the Tsar's daughter's nanny - they're all incredibly well-developed in terms of their personalities, thought processes, and character traits.
It's an engaging, entertaining, and witty read. And the best part is, the Puskin-esque phrase 'A fairy tale is a lie, but it contains a hint...' is all too obvious in this case. Even kids and adults can pick up on it.
The story of Fedot has become a true people's tale, and the author was even invited to read it on TV. It's especially relevant in our time, when many young people don't give a thought to right and wrong, truth and other basic human values. They just want to 'get ahead' and lord it over those who are weaker.
Be kind to others and read good books. Thanks for reading.
