My Laser Hair Removal Experience: A Cautionary Tale

summarizeEditor's Summary

I thought laser hair removal would be the magic solution to my unwanted body hair woes, but my experience with a local salon was a total letdown. After a year and a half of dealing with coarse black hairs growing back on my legs and inner thighs, I decided to give it a shot. But, boy, was I in for a surprise. The process was a nightmare, and the results were far from what I expected. I'm still dealing with unwanted hair growth, and I'm not convinced that laser hair removal is worth the hype.

I'm done with this place - their constant calls were driving me nuts, and I'm not going back anytime soon!
I'd been dealing with unwanted hair on my body for ages. After shaving my legs a lot, coarse black hairs started growing back (I know it's a myth now, but it worked like a charm for me). On the inner thigh, I had full-on black bushes, and it was a nightmare in my bikini too.
FINALLY!
I decided to get laser hair removal a year and a half ago. I didn't regret my decision, but I wish I'd chosen a better salon. I picked one based on location and reviews.THE FIRST PROCEDURE
I went in for my first appointment last September. Before the laser treatment, I had to shave myself at home, which was a total nightmare. I spent two hours doing it, especially the deep bikini area...
I had to fill out all the consent forms and sign a document listing all the contraindications and rules. The reception area and the salon itself made a good impression.
My technician turned out to be a nice, Eastern European-looking woman. I opted for the full package: legs, underarms, deep bikini, and the line above my pubic area.
Laser: alexandrite
The total came out to be around $9,850 with their discount card, which I also had to buy separately. They told me to undress, so I did, and I was left in my bra. We put on protective goggles, and I lay down on the couch. The flashes started, and the pain was intense, especially on my butt and bikini area. It was like being zapped with electricity, but the laser machine did help a bit by blowing cool air on me.
After the procedure, they applied a pantothenol cream, and I was told to do the same for the next few days. I bought it at the pharmacy, but the redness still persisted.
It's recommended to avoid sweating and taking a bath for a while after the procedure.
THE RESULTS
It was amazing, to say the least. A lot of hair came off, and it's been falling out for days, with no regrowth in sight. I even stopped shaving altogether, thanks to the autumn weather.

FUTURE PROCEDURES
Epilation needs to be done every month or a bit longer.
But then things kind of stalled. I didn't notice any visible progress compared to the first session. After two or three sessions with the first technician, I went to see another one (it was more convenient in terms of scheduling). She did two procedures on me. I knew that by the fourth or fifth session, my hair growth should increase, like my follicles would be triggered. And the lack of effect, I just wrote it off.
On my next session (which was in December), I went back to see the first technician again. She took a look at me and said she didn't see any results. She told me that the technician I had seen twice, had been let go. Apparently, she was using too low laser parameters to protect herself, so clients wouldn't feel pain, and they'd come back more often. But pain is what it's supposed to be.
This is great that she got let go, but what am I supposed to do with the months and money I've wasted? That's a problem with the salon, hiring technicians like that.

I went to this place before September 2023. I did over 10 procedures. I was told it was because of my testosterone levels. I completely understand that it's a real issue, but not that much... The technician highly recommended I go on birth control pills, saying she does and it's all fine. And these pitches were made every session. As a medical professional myself, I know exactly what it is and what the side effects are. I'm being monitored by a gynecologist, and we're managing my cycle with less invasive methods.
Overall, the epilation effect was there, but there were a lot of hairs left behind. On my bikini area, a whole line of hair was growing right next to my labia. I asked the technician to do a better job, but she said she had already done it, and then it would all grow back again and again... 😭

ANOTHER SALON
I went to Laser Home in November 2023. The technician confirmed that yes, testosterone does slow down the process, but there were clearly some areas that were done poorly, especially the bikini area... The technician from Friends was just gliding over the tops, not paying attention to the folds...
AFTER:
THE SALON'S HYGIENE ISSUES
This is a whole different story. I decided I'm done with Podrugi. They had a different opinion and kept calling me. It's their schtick. After every procedure, they call me from different numbers and remind me to book another appointment. They call me way too often, and I couldn't block or ignore them because it's always a different number

live_helpFeatured FAQ

Is laser hair removal worth the hype?

Honestly, I'm not convinced. My experience was disappointing, and I'm still dealing with unwanted hair growth. If you're considering it, do your research and find a reputable salon with good reviews.

How long does laser hair removal take?

The treatment itself is relatively quick, but you'll need to factor in time for shaving and aftercare.

Is laser hair removal painful?

It's not the most painful thing I've ever experienced, but it's not exactly a walk in the park either.

Can I do laser hair removal at home?

No, it's not recommended. You need to go to a professional salon with the right equipment and expertise.

Are the results permanent?

Not exactly. You'll need to go back for maintenance treatments to keep the hair at bay.

Is laser hair removal suitable for all skin types?

No, it's not. You'll need to check with the salon to see if you're a good candidate.

Can I use laser hair removal on sensitive areas?

It's not recommended. You'll need to take extra precautions and follow the aftercare instructions carefully.

How often do I need to go for laser hair removal treatments?

It depends on your individual needs and the salon's recommendations.

What are the potential risks of laser hair removal?

I didn't experience any major issues, but I've heard of people dealing with burns, ingrown hairs, and other complications. Make sure you do your research and choose a reputable salon.
