A Cautionary Tale: Be Cautious When Selling on Kufar

I've always been a fan of living an eco-friendly lifestyle, and I've got a system down pat for dealing with stuff that's no longer useful to me. If it's still in good condition, I donate it to friends or family, and if not, I either give it away for free or sell it on Kufar, which is Belarus's biggest online marketplace. I've been a part of it since the beginning - since my beloved old website and old website 2 shut down. I wrote a review for the first one back in 2011, and the second one... let's just say it was a loss. But thanks to Kufar, I was able to give it a good home. And now, it seems like Belarusians have caught on to the platform, and they're selling all sorts of things there.

I'm not a fan of Kufar, but I'm stuck with it because it helps me declutter my stuff. I'll share more about that in this review. As soon as I listed the boots, a potential buyer messaged me. He seemed legit at first, asking about the condition, but I'm a bit of a sensitive soul and can sniff out a weirdo from a mile away. After a few messages, I started to think this guy might be a dude who buys women's shoes for himself.

I've sold shoes to guys before, including a pair of high heels for a striptease performance (true story, it happened 10 years ago). But this guy took the cake. He showed up, asked to try on the boots, and when I offered to help him pack them up, he told me he was going to wear them... to a party!!! Let's move on to the usual stuff I sell on Kufar.

Toys and books are rare finds on my page, but it does happen. When my kid gets tired of something, I put it up for sale. I've sold a lot of Chicco toys for babies, toys from Mac, and a few dolls.

I've also sold some books – a textbook and a few specialty books. And right now, I'm selling a kids' washing machine. Three people have looked at it and added it to their favorites.

I want to focus on this category. We took out an old laminate floor (it was 10 years old) and were planning to replace it with parquet. My husband was worried that I'd put the laminate up for sale, like, who would want it?

But guess what? I sold the laminate in one day, and the queue of people interested confirmed that I'd undersold it. I also sold the old linoleum that was in the apartment since 1996, which we'd covered with laminate. I didn't ask what they wanted it for, but I sold it in just one day, along with linoleum from two rooms.

As for equipment, I sold an old phone, an old printer, a camera, an old foot bath, and some other small stuff.

I visit Kufar a few times a day, max two. I don't really like the site, but it's one of the options for selling unwanted items. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away, so I give them to those in need.

However, I don't try to buy from Kufar – the interface is terrible. But I do occasionally purchase rare items from a closed group in another online marketplace.

Kufar can be really pushy, and their services are expensive! When you post an ad, they'll start suggesting ways to promote it right off the bat. Eventually, your ad will end up on the main page, but I'm not sure what it'll be promoting.

Unfortunately, aside from the few honest sellers I've mentioned, Kufar is also home to scammers. Their scheme is pretty basic: they see an item and send you a message saying they're interested in buying it. They claim to be busy and willing to pay for shipping or delivery, but they'll ask you to click on a link or communicate through a messenger app.

I can spot them a mile away, and I usually just ignore them. If they claim to live in some random town, I'll jokingly tell them that our company's drivers visit there regularly, and I'll deliver the item myself.

I've noticed that some sellers on Kufar can be pretty shady, especially when it comes to night-time transactions. They'll often claim they can't deliver items at night, and then just ghost you. I've had a few experiences with sellers who tried to scam me by saying they'd deliver via taxi, but that's just a classic tactic. I've learned to be wary of those kinds of sellers.

I think Kufar is a great platform, but it's even better when there are multiple options available. Kufar is essentially a monopoly, and they're taking advantage of that. It's not easy to sell items in Belarus, especially when you're competing with established sellers. But Kufar does provide a convenient way for people to buy and sell items, even if it's not always the most straightforward process.

I think it would be really cool if there were more options available, like local marketplaces where people could sell items in their own neighborhoods. That way, kids could sell their old toys and games, and older folks could connect with each other and sell their unwanted items. But for now, Kufar is still the best option.

So, if you're looking for a way to declutter your home and make some extra cash, Kufar is definitely worth checking out. Just be sure to do your research and avoid any shady sellers.
