Hello there!
I'll admit it, I've visited some pretty famous places like the Vatican or Heidelberg just out of curiosity. It's beautiful, but it's also pricey and feels a bit touristy. I'm more of a fan of exploring local spots that have their own unique character. And let's be honest, we Russians are notorious for being lazy and not so adventurous. But that's exactly what makes these places so special.
I've been to Costomarov several times over the years, and each time I've left feeling refreshed and inspired. There's something about these places that puts you at ease and makes you feel more spiritual. It's like a weight's been lifted off your shoulders.
Let's start with the basics. The Don River has some incredible scenery, with limestone cliffs reaching heights of up to 200 meters. There's Divnogorie, Belogorie, and Costomarov, which is situated on the right bank of the Don. The area is known for its unique limestone formations, which are called 'divs'. It's no wonder these places have such evocative names.
Getting there is easy enough. You can take a bus or drive from Moscow - it's about 700 kilometers. If you're coming from the south, you can also take a detour. There's a parking lot on site, and then it's just a short walk to the monastery. There are signs and warnings to follow when you're on the monastery's property.I had to leave my camera behind, but I couldn't resist taking a few snaps. The scenery is just stunning. These places are often referred to as the 'Russian Palestine' because of their unique landscapes.
There's something special about this place. People seem to sense it, and I'm no exception. There's even a Golgotha here, but I'll save that for later.
There are eight caves in total.
The oldest and most impressive church is the Spassky Monastery, also known as the Church of the Uncreated Light.
The Spassky Bell Tower. It's carved into the limestone cliffs. There's a throne dedicated to the Uncreated Savior. Let's take a closer look.
This is a whole labyrinth of underground tunnels. The path to the church is a staircase. This church is unlike any other. I couldn't look away. The road to the church is a long one. And here's the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'The Reckoning of the Dead'. This is the main church of the monastery, and inside it's the most revered relic - the Costomarov Icon of the Mother of God. The icon is called 'The Reckoning of the Dead', but locals call it the 'executioner's icon'. It was written on a sheet of iron. A certain red-army soldier fired six shots at it. I'd love to know what happened to that 'peacekeeper'. But miraculously, the bullets missed the faces of the Mother of God and Christ. Then the church was finished.
As I walked through this place, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the architecture. The long corridor leading to the confessional was a remarkable sight.
Other structures on the grounds.
Now, let's talk about Golgotha. See the cross on top of the hill? That's the Pilgrim's Cross The climb up is going to be long and challenging. As I ascended, I made sure to prepare myself spiritually, reflect on my sins, and ask for forgiveness. That's the right mindset to have when visiting this place. We're finally starting the ascent.
Golgotha is usually the final stop on our itinerary in Kostenmarovo.
There are restrooms, a designated area for women to change into modest clothing, and a place to grab a snack. It's all very well-organized and dignified, with a peaceful atmosphere.
I could have taken photos inside the churches, but I didn't feel comfortable doing so.
Time is passing, and the area is being renovated. A new entrance has been built, and the church of the Icon of the Mother of God 'The Search for the Dead' has been completed, along with many other improvements. I have photos from different times, and I'm not sure what's better – the natural beauty of the place or the charm of the old architecture. In my opinion, the less we interfere with nature, the better. But as long as this place exists, where you can feel a sense of solitude and peace, it's definitely worth visiting. The purpose of your trip can be varied – an excursion, a pilgrimage, curiosity, or a family outing on the weekend – but it will be a valuable experience either way.
I'd definitely recommend this trip to you. There are a few options to choose from. I'd suggest heading to the monastery's website to check the schedule and deals. Pick the one that suits you.
