Kazan's Central Market: My Top Picks for Foodies and Market Lovers
After a long flight into Kazan International Airport, I was stoked to dive into the local scene. Unfortunately, my phone started lagging and my camera card died, so I don't have many photos from our winter trip. I've been meaning to write this review for a while, but I figured better late than never.
We decided to visit the Central Market during our stay in Kazan. To get there, we took the Kazan Metro to the city center and walked from there. Along the way, we checked out the Tatar Sloboda and grabbed some lunch at Kazan Kebab – their kebabs are seriously amazing!
The market has several entrances, but we went in through a side door. As we walked in, we were greeted by a sign pointing to a parking lot and some cool art installations. The vendors outside were selling fresh produce and clothes, but it was a bit chilly, so we headed inside to explore.
The market is divided into two main sections: one for produce and the other for meat. The meat section is seriously impressive, with a wide variety of cuts and types of meat. I was happy to see that they had partridge, which is a rare find in many places. The prices were super reasonable, and the quality of the meat looked great – you could tell it was fresh.
We also found a great selection of Eastern sweets, including some delicious-looking chak-chak. I had to try some, and it was a total game-changer. We also picked up some other treats, like baursak and some sweet, crunchy pastries. The variety of sweets was insane – you'll find something for every sweet tooth, whether you're a fan of traditional or modern flavors.
One of the highlights of the market was the kymys, a traditional Tatar drink made from fermented mare's milk. It's definitely an acquired taste, but I found it refreshing and worth trying. They also had a great selection of dried fruits, spices, and other local specialties that are perfect for souvenirs – I ended up buying a bunch of goodies to take back home.
The market was bustling with activity, but the vendors were friendly and not too pushy. We also found a small cafe inside the market serving traditional Tatar dishes. The prices were reasonable, and the food was delicious – I highly recommend trying their pelmeni, which were cooked to perfection.
I was blown away by the Central Market in Kazan. The variety of products, the quality of the goods, and the friendly vendors all made for a great experience. If you're visiting Kazan, I highly recommend checking out the Central Market – it's a must-visit spot for any foodie or market enthusiast looking to experience the local culture.
Some of the highlights of our visit included:
The insane variety of meats available, including partridge and other rare cuts. The amazing selection of Eastern sweets, including chak-chak and baursak. The traditional Tatar drink, kymys, made from fermented mare's milk – it's definitely a unique taste experience. The friendly and welcoming vendors, who were happy to chat and share their knowledge of the market. The small cafe serving traditional Tatar dishes, which was a great place to take a break and refuel.Of course, no market is perfect, and there were a few things that could be improved:
The lack of photos from our visit, due to my phone's issues – I wish I could've captured more of the market's vibrant atmosphere. The chilly weather outside, which made it less pleasant to browse the vendors – but that's just part of the winter experience, right?I would highly recommend the Central Market in Kazan to anyone visiting the city. It's a great place to experience the local culture and try some delicious foods – you won't regret it!
