I've been battling nasolabial folds for years, and they've been a constant source of self-consciousness for me. Every time I look in the mirror, I'm reminded of my deep wrinkles, and it's like a punch to the gut. But my friends are always on my case about getting a facelift, like it's the easiest thing in the world to fix.
I've been getting hyaluronic acid injections in my nasolabial folds for ages, but honestly, it hasn't made a huge difference for me. I've tried different practitioners at the same clinic, and I'm starting to think that finding the right specialist is key. But I'm still not sure about that.
So, today's review is about the Juvederm Ultra 3, a dermal filler that I thought would finally give me the smooth skin I've always wanted.
I got both my nasolabial folds and lips done that day, which is why the practitioner shows me two boxes of Juvederm.
I asked where they're sourced from, and they told me it's through Armenia.
Before the procedure.
Whether I'm smiling or just relaxing, these lines are always visible. Maybe it's because my cheekbones are too prominent and hang down a bit too much.
The cosmetologist told me I'm too late to start addressing this issue – I should've done it in my 20s, not my 40s, when it's too late to fix it. Now, it's just about maintenance.
Pre-procedure prep.
I know the drill when it comes to hyaluronic acid injections, so I was pretty prepared for the procedure.
Don't go to the beach or tanning salon Avoid taking antibiotics and aspirin Don't smoke or drink for two days beforehand No coffee in the morning before the procedure If you have any open wounds, avoid injecting in those areas
Injecting Juvederm Ultra 3.
I was a bit nervous about the procedure, so I asked the cosmetic surgeon to give me a local anesthetic beforehand. I'm usually okay with injections, but sometimes I get a little lightheaded. I made sure to let the surgeon know, and she had some smelling salts on hand just in case.
Juvederm Ultra 3 nose-to-mouth fold correction - review After a while, my face had frozen, and I told the surgeon I was ready, since I couldn't smile anymore.
Juvederm injection in nose-to-mouth folds - review The surgeon explained that she'd be injecting Juvederm into the lower layers of my skin, since it has high density, and then topping it off with another product.
She started the injection process, and I could feel every poke of the needle and every drop of the liquid. I was getting a bit anxious, and everything started to spin. I asked for the smelling salts. After I came to, we decided to wait a bit longer for the lidocaine to kick in.
Once it had taken effect, the injection process went much smoother, and I hardly felt anything. The second product was injected pretty easily.
After the procedure was finished, the injection site looked like this:
There were no bruises or discoloration, which is usually the case with lip injections. Everything was done very carefully.
My doctor told me to avoid direct sunlight, skip makeup, and steer clear of saunas or steam rooms for two weeks.
Evening.
By evening, the injection sites looked pretty much the same as they did during the day.
Just one spot had developed a tiny bruise, but it was barely noticeable.
Before bed, I applied some Chlorgexidine to the injection areas and put on some Traumel S.
Day 2.
By the second day, the injection sites were barely noticeable on one side.
But on the other side, a blue stripe had appeared on my nasolabial fold.
I decided to crack a smile and realized that I don't have nasolabial folds – but the smile wasn't exactly natural.
Day 3.
Things were looking up overall. My skin was looking smoother, and my facial hair was looking a bit more defined.
Day 4.
By the next day, things were healing pretty well. I was still applying Taumel S to the injection sites both in the morning and at night.
Day 5.
The overall look was already starting to show:
Of course, the nasolabial fold wasn't as noticeable against the larger lips.
Day 6.
Only one spot still showed a faint bruise mark.
Day 7.
The bruise mark was becoming less noticeable.
Three weeks later.
By the time a week had passed, I'd started to like the way I looked again and stopped monitoring my skin's condition. So, the photo was taken three weeks after the procedure.
I was surprised to see that my nasolabial folds had started to come back when I began taking pictures of my lips.
Four weeks later.
I tried to smile less and catch myself every time. It's really hard, but the fold was becoming more noticeable.
Six weeks later.
The fold was becoming more noticeable and had even reached my nose.
After 2.5 months.
I have to say, it's like things went back to normal. The deep nasolabial fold that was there before is still there now.
My takeaways.
I'm not as upset about the pain from the injections as I am about the money I paid for it. And let's be real, my friends were all like, 'Just go to a salon,' but I went to a clinic and paid a small fortune.
I'm really disappointed in the value for money, considering the result only lasted 2.5 months.
The manufacturers claim the result will last up to a year, but I think I started this procedure too late, and it's just not going to work for me now.
What's weird is that Juvederm lasts a long time in my lips (up to a year, actually), but it doesn't last at all in my nasolabial folds.
I'm really not happy with the result, and I've learned my lesson - injecting my nasolabial folds is a waste of time and money.
