A Holiday Romance That Falls Short of Its Promise

summarizeEditor's Summary

I dove into this holiday romance expecting a lighthearted, feel-good story, but it failed to deliver on its promise. The premise had me hooked - a small-town French actress lands a gig in LA, donning a disguise to evade the paparazzi. But the execution fell short, with a predictable plot and a romance that didn't quite click. If you're in the mood for a cheesy, over-the-top holiday tale, you might enjoy this one. But for me, it was a total letdown. I was expecting more depth and originality, but what I got was a shallow romance and a bunch of clichés.

I stumbled upon this book in a holiday roundup, and the description really caught my eye. It seemed to match the mood after reading Lorelei earlier:
Think romance like "Pretty Woman", the heart of "The Real Love Story", and the humor of "Bridget Jones' Diary" all rolled into one holiday romance!
Ellie Lobster's dream is to become a famous actress and conquer Hollywood. But is it really that easy when you're from a tiny village in France and your real surname translates to "country bumpkin"? And then, out of the blue, Ellie gets offered the most unusual job: to replace a famous actress who desperately needs to escape the paparazzi for the holidays. And not just anywhere... but in Los Angeles itself!
Donning the right wig, glasses, and armed with the actress's wardrobe, Ellie settles into her home to convincingly play the role, occasionally getting caught on camera by street photographers...
But how does this all tie in with a road trip across America in a house on wheels, tarot card readings, a church shootout, and all-consuming true love? Yeah, Ellie's Christmas will be one she'll never forget!
It's a 100% romance novel, but I'd say it doesn't quite live up to the movies mentioned. It's like the author tried to add a dash of "Bridget Jones' Diary" and "Pretty Woman" to the mix. There's a silly situation that could only happen to Bridget, and then a "Pretty Woman"-esque moment, but that's where the similarity ends.
Some things that didn't quite work for me:I was expecting something more original with the whole "replace a famous actress" thing, but it's a pretty tired trope. Some of the mystery elements were way too predictable, with everything lying on the surface. The romance was predictable, but the development was ridiculous, especially the epilogue.
Some things I did like:I enjoyed the French flair, but it was a bit lacking, and I wished I'd seen more cultural contrast from the start.I liked that the characters didn't create a soap opera out of thin air and actually talked through their conflicts.
This book didn't give me that warm, fuzzy holiday feeling or the lighthearted, humorous vibe of "Bridget Jones' Diary". It's a pleasant read, but the story will be forgotten soon. I don't think the author managed to create a memorable, cult-like character like Vivian from "Pretty Woman", and I couldn't recall any unique traits or quirks that made Ellie stand out.One thing that did stand out was the road trip across America in a house on wheels – it was a fun idea, even if it didn't quite come together as well as I'd hoped.
I'm not sure if it's worth buying the paperback, but reading it once is fine, and you'll have a decent time. If you're a fan of holiday romances, you might enjoy it, but for me, it was just okay.
