Hello everyone, and welcome to my latest review.
I just finished reading Archibald Joseph Cronin's second book, and I'm still reeling from the experience.
I started this 608-page novel back in September, but it took me a while to finish – it's a real challenge, even for a bookworm like me.
I'm not one to leave books unfinished, but I was determined to see this one through to the end.
So, let's dive into the details. The book is titled 'Three Loves' and was published in Moscow in 2019 by Inostranka.
Here are the key details: Author: Archibald Joseph Cronin, Title: Three Loves, Publisher: Inostranka, Location: Moscow, 2019, Number of pages: 608.
Three Loves. Archibald Joseph Cronin
The cover of this book is a real showstopper. It's understated, with gold foil accents and a painting of a sunset that really catches the eye.
Three Loves. Archibald Joseph Cronin
But it's not just the cover that impressed me – the inside of the book is just as beautiful. The author's work is showcased separately, along with a list of his notable works, and there's even a little bit about his biography on the back.
Three Loves. Archibald Joseph Cronin
Giving the size of this book, it's a great gift option – if it weren't for the content, which not every reader will appreciate.
Now, let's talk about the content. This novel is a story about the life and fate of a lady, and I have to admit, I was really intrigued by the book's annotation.
Three Loves. Archibald Joseph Cronin
I had no idea about the horrors of fate that lie beneath the surface. The author's tone can shift dramatically from the happy, well-organized life of the characters to a more somber, tragic description.
The descriptions of death, madness, and hardship would often take up three to five pages, leaving me stunned. I found myself wanting to put the book down, which I sometimes did.
This novel is a female-centric one, but it's a deep tragedy without any moonlit kisses or a lifetime love story.
The portrait of the main character, Lucy, by Archibald Joseph Cronin is vivid, alive, and genuine. From the first pages, I understood her drive for leadership, her determination, and her need to control every situation.
Lucy furrowed her brow and let out a nervous sigh. She constructed a strange edifice in her mind, missing only one final piece to complete it
It's much the same with everything around her: her relationships with people, her family, her husband. She'd analyze things that didn't need to be, didn't trust, and overthought.
She loved to dress stylishly for her time, of course. Even in hardship, she remained elegant and could present herself in the best light.
But beneath her beautiful exterior, Lucy's inner world was a mess of struggles, misunderstandings, and jealousy that ultimately destroyed her life and led her astray.
One could say she had a destructive kind of foolishness.
The writing is beautiful, with lovely turns of phrase. Even simple things are described with finesse and a pleasant touch:
She stumbled upon a patch of wild strawberries and started picking them. Dangling from thin stems, some of them were lit up by the sun, sparkling like clusters of pomegranates – a scattering of crimson dots on a green tapestry
The translation is undeniably successful.
I was fully invested in the story until the very end, hoping for a positive conclusion. This cautionary tale teaches us that a person's thoughts directly influence their fate.
However, I wouldn't recommend this book to sensitive readers. If you're the type who thinks deeply about what you've read and feels strongly for the characters, this book will leave you with an uncomfortable, haunting feeling.
I also wouldn't recommend it to kids or teenagers, even though it's rated 16+.
Thanks for reading!
