We stumbled upon Gusev on our September 2025 trip to Kaliningrad Oblast, but what we experienced was a whole different story.
After checking into a hotel and getting some rest, we headed out the next day to explore the city. And boy, were we in for a surprise – our stroll around Gusev lasted almost four hours, and it turned out to be a lot more interesting than we'd anticipated.
The city's cleanliness and well-maintenance really stood out to me. There's a good amount of stuff worth checking out, including parks, buildings, and landmarks. I'll share what caught my eye without any particular system, just as we were walking around.
So, here are some must-see spots in Gusev:
- The Catholic Church of Apostle Andrew is quirky, but kind of charming;
Church- The Agro-Industrial College's Building 2 is impressive, with its German 'barracks-style' architecture;
College- The building on ul. Pobedy, 26, is a great example of what I mean – we couldn't figure out what it was used for, but it's nice-looking;
House- The Salzburg Church is pretty standard, but it's worth a visit;
Church- The two old water towers near the train station are nice-looking, and there's a museum inside. Next to it is a locomotive;
- The Monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union - Soldier Gusev (yes, the city's named after him) is a must-see;
Monument to Soldier Gusev- The Church of All Saints is colorful, lively, and cute;
Cathedral- The old town hall building has been well-preserved, and we even got to hear the chimes;
Rathaus- The city hall is a real showstopper – its architecture is simply stunning;
Bank- The Teutonic architecture of the courthouse is another highlight;
Court- The T-34 tank memorial and the city park are also worth a visit. The park is a bit of a mess, but it's a great place to stroll around;
TankCity park- The Uspenskaya Church is a tiny, hidden gem;
Uspenskaya Church- The Agricultural College is another interesting spot – the building itself is pretty cool;
College- The Krailsbau is a beautiful building, although it's now used for military purposes. I didn't get any hassle from the authorities, but I didn't take any photos either;
- the memorial to the winners of the war and the adjacent park;
Memorial- and the river Pissa with its picturesque views, walking paths, and bridges;
Pedestrian BridgeAnd the road bridge- The Student Square is super clean and cozy.
Student Square- Just take a stroll around the city and check out the street art. There are plenty of murals that really stand out.
Just a houseAnother houseAnd another houseBeautifulAvoid going to these places:
- The Gumbinnen railway station is listed as an interesting spot on maps, but in reality, it's all ruined and only the foundations remain;
The old station- The barracks complex on Lenin Avenue is beautiful, but closed off behind a fence, and in a pretty rough state...
We didn't eat out (coffee shops don't count). We lived there for a bit – it was okay.
So, what really stood out to me in Gusev was the city's cleanliness and well-maintenance. It's a great place to check out the architecture and take a stroll. I was impressed by the variety of buildings and landmarks, and the city's overall charm. Just be aware that some places might be closed or in disrepair.
