I have to admit, my kid's recent participation in the GTO norms was a wild ride for our whole family. We're not exactly a sporty family, but our PE teacher at the daycare kept pushing for them to join in.
To pass the norms, you first need to register on the official website: GTO Russia
To register a child under 14, you need to create an account on the "Government Services" portal - it's created by one of the parents with a confirmed account and automatically linked to their account. Once the child turns 14 and gets a passport, they can register on their own.
I was getting a bit anxious at this stage, as my email kept refusing to register. Then, something would freeze. I managed to get it sorted on the third try. My tip is to use the same address as your account on your phone. I set up a Gmail account for my kid and then installed it on their tablet. Even though they're young, they'll need a phone eventually, and having a bunch of accounts is just unnecessary. Now my kid has an official account on government services. Without it, you can't access your personal GTO account. After registration, you get an UIN - an individual number for taking the tests.
Next up, you need to go through a medical examination. Our sports doctor requires a medical certificate with a pediatrician's and the child's own conclusion. After getting the certificate, you need to hand it over to the norms acceptance department.
And that's it - just wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
I think it's a great idea. We live in a small town (around 70,000 people) and they organized a mini-festival on the stadium for us. There were tons of kids. They were all doing the first level (ages 6-7).
When you sign up, you'll get a set of standards to meet, which depend on your age and sex. Here are the age-based levels of the GTO complex:
• 6-7 years old - 1 level
• 8-9 years old - 2 level
• 10-11 years old - 3 level
• 12-13 years old - 4 level
• 14-15 years old - 5 level
• 16-17 years old - 6 level
• 18-19 years old - 7 level

My son's experience:

However, he fell short of the gold standard in flexibility, earning a silver medal instead. The badge is awarded based on the lowest standard achieved.
Our teacher suggested retaking the test if we didn't want a silver medal. Personally, I would have been happy with a silver, but my son suddenly developed a competitive spirit. He really wanted to get a gold medal. So, we decided to retake the test. They usually hold acceptance sessions every 2-3 months for different types of tests. My son worked hard to prepare. The key to passing the flexibility test was stretching. He stretched for almost a month, doing simple forward bends with a hold at the bottom position. Of course, this paid off. After a month of training, he managed to pass the test.

This was a great experience. Of course, there's a lot of bureaucracy involved, just like everywhere else. The organized celebration was fantastic. There's a big downside, though. We'll get the badge when the fourth quarter of 2025 is over. In my Amur region, the badges of honour haven't been delivered for a whole year now! A whole year! That was a real shock for me. How is that possible? Those who passed the norms in the fourth quarter of 2024 are still waiting for their badges. That's just not fair. What's the incentive, especially for kids? At least the local sports department gave all the participants a notebook as a reward. Big thanks for that, but why should kids wait years for a badge they've earned? That's a mystery to me. Will we go for the next levels? I don't know, if the kid wants to. Again, we're not a sports family. I saw how the kids prepared, doing warm-ups and trial runs, and so on. Maybe the results would have been different then.
For the very first level, it's really tough to pass without preparation. But what about the next levels? This was a great experience that made a not-so-hardworking kid set a goal.
