The Mutant Plant That Saved My Sanity (and Your Design Career)

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm stoked to share my third attempt at growing Hypoestes, and I've got to say, it was a total success. I got a 100% germination rate, and the mutant plant that stood out with its bright magenta hue was the real showstopper. The seeds from Gavish were a breeze to work with, and the price was super reasonable. Now, I'll be honest, it's not perfect - two seedlings bit the dust after using fungicide - but I'm glad one beautiful little sprout remained. If you're looking for a low-maintenance plant to brighten up your space, I highly recommend giving Gavish Hypoestes a try. Just be prepared for the possibility of getting the same color pattern, and don't be afraid to experiment with different growing conditions. I've learned that Hypoestes is a great plant for boosting your mood, and it's relatively easy to care for. Just make sure to check the soil moisture regularly and avoid overwatering.

Hello there! I'm excited to share my third attempt at growing Hypoestes. My first try was the most successful, so be sure to check out the review if you're interested. The second attempt didn't yield anything, but we're here to talk about the third one now.
About the Seeds: Is it Worth Buying from Gavish?
I'm thrilled to say that all my seeds germinated. Not all at once, but they did, which was a huge relief. Two plants had the same color, while the third one stood out with its bright magenta hue. Unfortunately, two seedlings died after using fungicide, but I'm glad one beautiful little sprout remained.
The germination rate for Gavish is 90-100%. This time around, I got a 100% success rate. The number of seeds. They never skimp on quantity! The price. It's super reasonable, coming in at just 100 rubles at Leroy. There's a chance you'll get the same color pattern. I was lucky this time, and I got one magenta one.I got a mutant. Maybe they were experimenting with white ones, but that's just my guess...👍 Worth buying seeds from Gavish. The quality matches the price.
My Experience
You can notice that the Hypoestes on the left has different-shaped leaves, and it's not just the middle one that's different - this is quite an unusual phenomenon for my plants, especially those grown from seeds.
After the unsuccessful preventive measures, two seedlings died, but the mutant survived. As it grew, more unusual leaves appeared.
I've even highlighted them specifically. I didn't do anything to it - I just watered it regularly.
My hypotheses about what might have caused this:
Natural mutation. Improper seed storage.ExperimentationMy little guy has temporarily moved into a small yogurt cup. Let's just say no moral lessons for now... I'm well aware that its root system takes up a lot of space, and Hypoestes needs a big pot.
In the meantime, it even managed to participate in a photoshoot.
By the way, about pots:
Hypoestes doesn't care about the pot material - whether it's plastic, ceramic, or clay, it's all the same to it.They love big pots, but if you're not willing to give up the pot for one plant, consider planting multiple Hypoestes at once or adding it to another plant.Neighbors:
My spotted friend has become quite the companion for me and my plants - don't leave it alone, though. It'll survive, but it's pretty obvious that someone's feeling down.
I eventually transplanted the aquilegia into a pot with a hypestes. Now they're together, but soon I'll have to replant them.
It looks so small still) And new leaves have started growing around the sides - I've never seen that before. Too bad the rest of them died, or I could've compared their growth, leaf size, color, stress resistance, and more.
SMALL BUT LONG
I tried to root a cutting, but it didn't work out - it died overnight. I stuck the cutting in water, and it just wilted... Although many people said that hypestes roots quickly and easily, I guess that's not my case 😞
REPLANTINGI've replanted this wonder multiple times, but this is the final time. I decided that this mutant is better off alone, and the aquilegia needs space - I want it to bloom.
My trusty sidekick - Michelle
Honestly, I don't enjoy replanting - it's all a bit of a hassle for me, and considering that my pelargoniums died once and didn't thrive afterwards, I do it with a birth control face.
After this replanting, the leaves became weak and wilted. I thought, 'They're done for', but the music didn't last long. I quickly realized that I should put the aquilegia and hypestes under a lamp for a few hours, and they recovered.
LIGHT IS A QUICK REANIMATION FOR PLANTS
The hypestes is actively growing upwards, despite me pruning it - that's actually a plus for me, as I'll get my own seeds.BLOOMING
Despite my efforts to prune the stem, the plant still grew tall and bloomed accordingly. Last time, I had purple flowers, but this time, I got white ones, which caught me off guard. I'll definitely collect the seeds and plant them.
You can also use the leaves for creative projects. Dry them out and glue them into a personal journal or a gardener's notebook. They can also serve as bookmarks.
I decided to trim the long leaves since the hypoeastis decided to grow downwards as well. It looks nice.
MYTHS OR REALITY ABOUT THE CREATIVE POWER OF HYPOEASTIS Yes, this flower really helps creative people in crisis. I sometimes placed it next to my laptop and felt a new surge of energy. So, now I know what to give my friends:)
Programmers will find it helpful in calming their minds and relaxing after a long workday.
FINAL VERDICT - RECOMMEND I'm really fond of Gavrysh seeds, and the germination rate is impressive, not to mention the affordable price 😊
These seeds are perfect for both beginners and experienced gardeners, as growing this plant is relatively easy in my opinion.
Thank you for reading! I hope this review was helpful ❣
