My Honest Review of FructoTest Pregnancy Tests: A Cautionary Tale

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been using FructoTest pregnancy tests for years, but my latest experience left me feeling pretty let down. On the surface, these tests seem like a great value for the price – they're super affordable, come in a pack of two, and the results are crystal clear. However, I've had some pretty wild experiences with them, and I'm here to share my honest review. I've always been pretty satisfied with them, but a recent incident left me shocked. Let's take a closer look at the tests and see if they're still worth your money.

Hello everyone!
I've had some pretty wild experiences with FructoTest pregnancy tests, and I'm here to share my honest review.
I first started using these tests back in 2017 when I was planning my eldest child. I've always been pretty satisfied with them – they're a great value for the price, come in a pack of two, and the results are super clear.
Either I get a blank line with no 'ghost' readings, or a positive result with two lines. These tests have never let me down until a recent incident left me shocked.
For now, let's take a closer look at the tests.
The packaging is bright and informative:
It says on the packaging that you can use the test up to 4 days before your period is due:
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, 'Wait a minute, I thought it was 2 days!' Well, it's actually been updated to 4 days, but not always clearly marked.
Shelf life is 3 years:
When you open the box, you'll find a detailed instruction manual and two tests in individual sealed pouches:
The instruction manual is super detailed:
The test is standard, not digital, so you need to submerge it in a cup with your urine.
Using it is pretty straightforward – just follow the instructions, and you'll be good to go.
From my experience, the test really shows pregnancy very early on.
For example, here's my positive test from 2017, 11 DPO:
And this is the Evitest from the same day – it was a bit fainter:
I've been using FructoTest ever since, and I make sure to get the double pack because, let's be honest, I'm a total test-obsessed person.
Here's my positive FructoTest result from 2022, with a 9 DPO reading:
The line is pretty faint, but it's definitely there.
It didn't take long for it to become a clear and prominent line:
When we decided to have a third baby, I also bought FructoTest.
I picked up three packs at the Vita pharmacy during a 2+1 promotion.
It ended up costing me 438 rubles for all three packs.
The test came back positive in my first cycle of planning, with a 9 DPO reading as well:
And it quickly became a bright and clear line (by 10 DPO):
In my case, FructoTest accurately and clearly showed pregnancy from 10 DPO (my cycles are around 28 days, and I tracked ovulation using tests).
This pregnancy, unfortunately, ended in a miscarriage at a very early stage, but that's a whole different story.
After the miscarriage, I had an exam and they found some irregularities in my analysis for oncocytes, HPV, and cervical dysplasia.
They sent me to wait a few months, then I had to retake the analysis, get a colposcopy, and figure out the next steps for surgical treatment.
I was getting a bit anxious in November when my period was late. Just a couple of days, but I'd never experienced anything like it before, given that my cycle was always as regular as clockwork.
Of course, my husband and I were taking precautions, using multiple methods to ensure we were safe. We'd never had any unwanted pregnancies throughout our lives, and I'd always been responsible about this aspect.
But, being the worrier that I am, all sorts of worst-case scenarios were running through my head – stories about women getting pregnant even when they'd had their tubes tied.
To calm myself down, I decided to take a pregnancy test, even though I knew in my head that the chances of me being pregnant were less than 0.01%.
So, I took the test and got this result:
The line was faint, but it looked roughly the same as the one I'd gotten on my 9th DPO during my second and third pregnancies.
I took another test, and the result was the same.
Incidentally, I'd never seen any faint lines or false positives on my pregnancy tests before. Either there was a clear line, which would get darker over time, or there was nothing at all, regardless of the lighting or angle.
I didn't sleep that night because I had no idea how this could be possible, and I was worried about how I'd cope with a pregnancy complicated by a narrow cervix and the potential risks that came with it.
And, to make matters worse, I was also thinking about the possibility of cancer (since certain tumors can cause HCG levels to rise).
The next morning, I rushed off to the lab to get a blood test for HCG.
Then it was another agonizing day of waiting...
And, pay attention to this – the result:
So, that faint line on the test – it was clearly not a result of HCG in my urine, since my levels weren't even elevated!
This was a genuine false positive (and a specific one, to boot).
I decided to run another test strip in regular tap water as part of my experiment.
The result? Three test strips!
Two of the strips, aside from the control, were clearly the dye that had leaked out.
And the white strip in between them was where the test strip was supposed to be, which would turn color if the test was positive.
I'm guessing that on the test that had me worried, the dye might have leaked out next to the test strip on the other test, but only on one side.
As for why that happened, I'm not sure if it was due to poor shipping or storage conditions or if the tests themselves have just gotten worse over time.
By the way, these tests are now made in China, whereas they used to be made in Germany.
They've been reliable for years, but that one incident cost me a lot of stress, so I'm giving them 3 stars.
I'd still recommend buying them (hoping it was just a bad batch), but now I'd suggest getting a few different test strips just in case.
Thanks for reading, I hope my review was helpful!
