Fredrik Backman's 'The Troubled Man' is a Masterclass in Complex Storytelling
Hello there!
I'm a huge fan of Fredrik Backman, and for good reason. The guy has a knack for making complex things seem simple, and vice versa. His stories are raw and real, with characters that are multidimensional and relatable. He doesn't try to tell you who's good or bad - he lets you decide for yourself. His characters are everyday people with their own strengths and weaknesses, and they're facing tough choices and making difficult decisions every step of the way.
The title of the book is 'Beartown', but the original Swedish title is 'Björnstad', which roughly translates to 'beaver town'. It's also known as 'Beartown' in English, and the Russian translation is 'Medvedi Ugol', which is a colloquialism for a remote or backwater place.
Plot
I'll try to summarize it without giving away too much, but I think it's better to just dive in and read the book without any spoilers. The story is set in a small Swedish town called Beartown, which is struggling to survive. The town has a factory, but it's constantly laying off workers, and there are no jobs to be had. The people are poor, and they're desperate for a change. The town's fate is tied to the local hockey team, which is on the verge of making it to the semifinals. If they win, the town will finally get the funding it needs, and things will start to look up.
But this isn't just a sports story - it's about power, and the ability to do whatever you want. It's a metaphor for the struggles we all face, and the choices we make. The story is ultimately about people, and their relationships, thoughts, and feelings. It's about teenage and adult problems, social status, money, and poverty. It's about power and helplessness, friendship and love, and making the right choices.
Structure and style
The narrative is unconventional, but it's engaging and immersive. The storytelling is cinematic and fragmented, but it keeps you on the edge of your seat. You get to know the characters through a series of vignettes, and it's like a snowball effect - you start to care about them, and you want to know what happens next.
The writing style is effortless and simple, but it's also punchy and engaging. The author uses hooks to keep you reading, and the story is full of unexpected twists and turns. It's like a rollercoaster ride, and you're not sure what's going to happen next.
Main event
Of course, there's a pivotal event in this novel, and everything else builds up to it. This event happens exactly in the middle of the book and literally divides the story into 'Before' and 'After', just like it does for the characters' lives.
The first half introduces the reader to the characters, their personalities, social status, families, and life paths, including their achievements and setbacks.Kaboom! The second half shows how the characters react to the event, and the author highlights the struggles of conscience, the importance of making the right choices, and the significance of dignity and honor. Each character has their own opinion and perspective, but not everyone is willing to express it. It's fascinating to observe and often leaves you wondering how you would have handled the situation.Young Adult?
I don't think this novel belongs to the Young Adult genre. The presence of teenage characters and their problems is a major theme, but this novel is about more than that. So, no - this novel is not just for teenagers or about teenagers.
Relevance
The themes and issues explored in this novel are universal and extremely relevant. It's not just about a specific event; it's about the ongoing struggles we all face. Relationships between parents and kids, poverty and prosperity, cruelty, injustice, selflessness, friendship, and love - that's our daily life. Bakman is the author who writes about our lives.
Book summary (strengths and weaknesses)
This novel can be broken down into life lessons and shared as everyday wisdom. Although the author doesn't take anyone's side and doesn't force the reader to do so, everyone understands it perfectly. Who did what, why, and how - it all becomes clear, and that's the book's main strength.
Another undeniable plus is the well-written characters, despite the author not describing their physical appearance. The image is built from their behavior, speech, and thoughts.
For me, one of the downsides was the overly positive ending. I would have liked it a bit darker - not in terms of death, but in terms of moral destruction. It fell a bit short for me.
What's next?
'The Bear Pit' is a trilogy. The first book was released in 2016. The second book, 'We Against You', came out in 2017, and the third, 'After the Storm', in 2022. I'll definitely be reading the rest and recommending them.
Fredrik Backman is a master of complex storytelling, and 'The Troubled Man' is a testament to his skill. If you're looking for a novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you think about the world around you, then this is the book for you.
