I'm a self-proclaimed book nerd, and I've been lucky enough to have reading as a constant companion throughout my 30s. I've always been drawn to a wide range of writers - from timeless classics to contemporary authors. I'm a self-proclaimed book nerd, and I'm grateful that reading has been a constant companion throughout my 30s. I've always been drawn to a wide range of writers - from timeless classics to contemporary authors.
I stumbled upon Fredrik Backman's work a couple of years ago, and I'm glad I started with his bestsellers, 'A Man Called Ove' and 'Barkling Boy.' If I had begun with 'Britt-Mari,' I'm not sure I would have continued with his books.
The book I read was a physical copy with a hardcover, which I picked up at a local bookstore. I'm a big fan of print books; there's just something about them that digital versions can't replicate.
Fredrik Backman - Britt-Mari Reviews So, what's the book about? It's about a woman in her 40s going through a divorce from her husband after he cheated on her. I mean, that's a pretty big betrayal - not just the infidelity, but the fact that he was living with his mistress and spending a lot of time with her.
Now she's starting from scratch, and her whole life has been defined by serving her husband and taking care of the household. She doesn't know who she is or what she wants; she's just a shell of a person.
I have to admit, the main character really disappointed me. I didn't find her relatable or inspiring. She's just a victim who got played, and I didn't feel any sympathy for her. In fact, I was let down by this book.
But, Backman is a great writer, and there are some amazing quotes in this book. I've highlighted a few of them for you:
One of the things I liked about the book was the way it handled the financial crisis. The main character would often argue with her husband's opinions, saying things like, 'My husband says...' It was interesting to see how she navigated these conversations.
Britt-Mari Reviews
Here's another quote that stood out to me:
My verdict? This isn't Backman's best work. If you want to start with him, I'd recommend checking out 'A Man Called Ove' or 'Barkling Boy' first. This book fell flat for me, but maybe it'll be more to your taste.
As a bookworm, I have high standards for the characters I read about. Unfortunately, the main character in 'Britt-Mari' didn't meet those expectations for me. I found her to be unrelatable and uninspiring, which made it difficult for me to become invested in her story.
Despite my disappointment with the main character, I do think Backman is a talented writer. The book has some thought-provoking moments, particularly when it comes to the financial crisis and the main character's conversations with her husband.
Overall, I would say that 'Britt-Mari' is a decent read, but it's not Backman's strongest work. If you're new to his books, I would recommend starting with one of his other novels before diving into this one.
