In the late 1970s, Fjallraven's founder Oke Nordin decided to create an affordable backpack for students. At the time, kids were carrying all their school stuff in briefcases and bags, which was contributing to the development of scoliosis – a major concern in Swedish society. The goal was to design a backpack that would distribute the weight from one shoulder to both and reduce the risk of spinal curvature.
When creating the Kanken, Oke Nordin took inspiration from the dimensions of two A4-sized notebooks – the most common item in Swedish students' backpacks. To get a better understanding of what students wanted, he consulted with the Swedish Scout Association – the largest youth organization in the country at the time.
By the start of the 1978/1979 school year, Nordin had prepared a test batch of 200 backpacks... which sold out almost instantly! The company had to rush to produce another 200 units. By 1979, Kanken was experiencing phenomenal success – the model sold 30,000 units, and that number just kept growing. By 2008, over 2 million Kanken backpacks had been sold worldwide, with around 200,000 produced annually.

It looks and feels like a dense cotton canvas, and it even shares some of its properties.
