Specifications
I've gotta say, the Ficus Microcarpa Moklamé has been a total game-changer for me. This low-maintenance plant is a breeze to care for, and its stunning emerald green leaves are a sight to behold. What sets it apart from other Microcarpas is its unique, rounder leaves that grow more frequently.
I first brought this baby home about two years ago, when I bought a small, unrooted cutting from Avito. Thankfully, ficuses are super easy to root in water, and within two weeks, it was ready to be transplanted into a pot. Nine months later, it was time to upgrade to a bigger pot – one that's around 4.5 liters in size – and it's been thriving ever since, even sharing space with a young pomegranate plant.
A mature plant's overall appearance
A younger sibling Don't get me wrong, this plant is super easy to care for, but it does have a few specific needs. When it comes to humidity, as a descendant of the humid Asian tropics, it needs its fair share of moisture in the air. In practice, a mature plant can handle low humidity, but during winter, it's best to avoid placing it near a radiator. Younger plants are more sensitive and require regular misting (at least 2-3 times a week) for the first few weeks after transplanting.
Lighting is another crucial aspect – it loves bright spots, but be sure to avoid direct sunlight, especially after misting. Mine's situated near a west-facing window, and it's been doing great under the warm sunlight.
Watering is a bit tricky; instead of focusing on frequency, monitor the soil's moisture levels and water generously when the top layer feels dry. Ficus Moklamé can handle both short-term dry spells and occasional overwatering.
Repotting is a must every now and then – as it grows, you'll need to transplant it into a bigger pot every 2-3 months. Adult plants can simply get a fresh top layer of soil and some fertilizer, while younger plants benefit from a more thorough repotting.
Pests are a rare occurrence, but I did spot a spider mite on some of my younger plants. If you don't want to use chemicals, a warm shower and some gentle leaf wiping with a spirit-based solution will do the trick.
Propagation is a breeze – simply root it in water, and you'll have a new plant in no time. I've already got a few 'babies' growing, and they're doing great.
One of the 'babies' after pruning Pruning is optional, but if you want to keep it in check or shape it into a smaller bush, go for it. This plant will thank you for it.
Leaves up close I highly recommend this ficus to both seasoned collectors and beginners who want to grow a tree indoors. Its unique beauty and low-maintenance nature make it a standout in the plant world.
