I'm not one to write reviews for books, but I really wanted to share my thoughts on this one.
My journey with Stephen King's works started with 'Mr. Mercedes', but unfortunately, the incest storyline really threw me off. I liked the detective hero, Bill Hodges, but that plot twist ruined the book for me.
Next up was 'Carrie', but it just didn't click with me. I didn't enjoy the main character, and it took me a while to get interested in King's works again.
That changed when I read 'Misery', which I really enjoyed, despite some intense moments. I was hooked, and I wanted to read more of King's novels.
'Eye of the Beholder' is my fourth King novel, and it's hands down my favorite so far.
About the edition.
I bought my copy of 'Eye of the Beholder' at 'The Old Bookstore', which I love. I like buying and selling books there, and I've never thrown a book away - I either sell it or donate it to a library.
My book is from 1992, and it shows its age, but that doesn't bother me. I like the cover, which captures the mood of the book perfectly. On the back, there are characters that I'm not entirely sure are the main character as an adult with the investigator from the Agency or her parents in their youth.
The pages have a yellowish tint, and the text is comfortable to read.
What really stood out to me was the introduction to the book:
At the author's request, the book's royalties were converted to a fund to help children in Bryansk affected by the Chernobyl disaster.
I was surprised to learn that King was involved in charity work, especially for the benefit of the USSR/Russia.
About the format.
One thing that really caught my attention was the way the book is structured. It's divided into 12 chapters, and the main narrative is framed by these little star symbols that divide the story into different sections. The story jumps back and forth between past and present, and we get these little flashbacks that give us a glimpse into what's going on in the characters' lives.
I've been told that this book is a bit hard to categorize, but I think it's basically a sci-fi thriller with a bit of adventure thrown in. The author describes it as a 'thriller with a touch of science fiction and fantasy,' but I think that's a bit of a cop-out. It's a thrill ride, plain and simple.

For me, the story can be broken down into two main parts: 'on the run' and 'in captivity.' These two parts are roughly equal in terms of page count, and they both have their own unique twists and turns. The author does a great job of switching between these two storylines, keeping the reader on their toes.
The story is told in the third person, and we get to see the world through the eyes of different characters. There's the father, the daughter, and the agents from the mysterious Company - each one has their own motivations and secrets.
Now, I'm not going to rehash the official description, but basically, it's about a guy named Andy who agrees to participate in a scientific experiment, only to discover that he has telepathic abilities. His daughter inherits this power, and things get really complicated from there. The Company gets involved, and Andy and his daughter have to go on the run to save themselves.
As for the genre, I think it's mostly sci-fi with a bit of adventure thrown in. According to Wikipedia, it's a mix of thriller, horror, and sci-fi, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. It's more like a sci-fi thriller with a bit of action.
I have to say, the book is really easy to read, and it's not too long or too short. There are no info dumps or overly long descriptions of settings or characters. I was able to finish it in three days, and it was a wild ride.
Is this book interesting? Absolutely!
Is it worth reading? Definitely!
I think this book is a great choice for anyone looking to get into Stephen King's writing. It's not too heavy or too scary, and it's a great introduction to his style. So, if you're looking for a fun and thrilling read, I highly recommend checking this one out!
P.S. I have to say, the ending left me feeling a little proud of the main character and excited for what's next. To be honest, I didn't fully understand the conclusion until I read it again the second time.
