Enchanted by Death by Valérie Ansard

This novel by Valérie Ansard is a real page-turner. It's a thought-provoking mystery that'll keep you guessing until the very end. I loved how it explores the human condition in a way that's both haunting and beautiful.

A Chilling Dive into the Dark Side of Human Nature

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm not usually into true crime stories, but this one's different. It's less about the gruesome details and more about the psychology behind these crimes. The writing's engaging, and the author's done a great job of weaving a story that's both fascinating and unsettling. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll love this one. The book's well-researched, and you can tell the author's put in the time to get it right. The story's engaging, and I found myself getting sucked in, even when I didn't want to. It's a great addition to any true crime fan's library, and the cover art's eye-catching, to boot.

Warning sign: you've been warned!
I'm not one to seek out stress by watching documentaries about serial killers or reading books about them, but I do have a few of these in my library. This book, however, has proven that I'm not alone in my fascination. While it doesn't exactly calm my nerves, it does send me down a rabbit hole of morbid curiosity.
☠️Valerie Aiyers Enchanted by Death☠️
Age rating: 18+ Where to buy: Wildberries Number of pages: 230
🤡First Impressions🤡
The book's cover art is pretty eye-catching, with a creepy clown face and some eerie undertones. It's definitely got my attention.
The back of the book has an even cheesier description. The flip sides are just plain white. The font in the book is big, contrasty, and pretty unusual. The dividers are just filled with a dull gray color. There's a black and white image, like old-school photos. It's of really poor quality, like it was scanned on some ancient scanner. But the white pages are a nice touch.
😛What's this book about and what can you find in it?😛
I have to say, the book's divided into sections based on the types of psychopaths. Let me give you a rundown of what's inside.
KidnappingIn this section, there are three stories that'll leave you chilled to the bone. The first one from Japan was just brutal. I mean, even for a psychopath, it's too much. The level of cruelty is just shocking.
The story about the father who kept his daughter in a basement, abused her, and she had kids - it's a familiar tale, but still disturbing. I think most people know this one.
The story about the couple who kept a girl in a wooden box is just... wow. What's even more surprising is how they managed to find each other.
Sexual PsychopathsThis section has eight blood-curdling stories about different famous psychopaths. If you're into true crime, you'll know them all - like Chikatilo, for example. The ones in this section are a bit more obscure, but still worth reading.
I'll just give you a quick rundown of the last three stories to avoid spoilers.
The Siberian Butcher... I'm still in shock that the guy who killed and tortured that girl got only three years. Three years, that's it, Karl. And his sister, who helped dispose of the bodies and even cooked meals from human flesh, got off scot-free. Unbelievable.
The Serial Killer Expert.
This one's a real-life psycho with a twisted imagination. He found people who were suicidal and 'helped' them.
The Nylon Psycho
This is a story about how you work on your reputation, and then your reputation works for you.
Organized Crime GroupsThis section has three subheadings. It talks about different groups based on their foundation – a sect, a family, or a music band.
I drew a conclusion from this book: people gathering in groups based on their interests is a classic, but it's terrifying when those interests involve someone's death or suffering.
It's mind-boggling how people manage to find like-minded individuals to support their twisted endeavors.
Serial KillersThe Kazan Alligator and The Meat Grinder
This is an absolutely chilling story! It highlights how most serial killers don't change. If someone has a twisted inclination towards violence, they can't overcome it.
What's shocking is how quickly people who've committed heinous crimes, like murders and rapes, get released from prison.
There are brief descriptions of five more serial killers in this section. I'll leave it for those who want to read the book themselves.
It's only fitting to leave a dark mystery hanging in the air 😁

🦊My Opinion🦊
I was sold on the description of this book. I thought it would delve into the psychology behind these people's actions, what drove them, and what was going on in their minds.
Unfortunately, this book is just a collection of dry facts about famous serial killers, some of which are copied verbatim from online articles.
The majority of the content is a list of biographical details: where they were born, how they lived, where they were imprisoned, what they were charged with, how they were caught, and what they said afterward.
There's a bit more information about each victim, but that's about it.
I have to say, I didn't find much to get excited about in this book, aside from the descriptions of the atrocities committed within its pages. The sheer number of people with head injuries, willing to cause harm, violence, and even kill their own kin, is shocking. It's equally disturbing to see how many of them manage to find followers, accomplices, and like-minded individuals who share their interests and philosophy. What really gets my blood pressure up is how often the police turn a blind eye to certain crimes, ignoring the victims and refusing to believe them. It's appalling how quickly they release these monstrous individuals back into society, allowing them to continue their violent work. Not the kind of people who accidentally push an attacker, causing them to fall and hit their head, resulting in their death. I'm talking about those who take pleasure in brutally killing others, with full awareness of their actions. In my opinion, people like that should be locked away for life, or face the death penalty where it's still an option. And it's not just that – many of these individuals don't even show remorse, take responsibility for their crimes, or acknowledge the harm they've caused. They often take pride in their actions, even when they're not proven in court. Releasing these psychopaths back into society after just 3-5-10 years is just horrific.
Frankly, reading this book didn't give me any satisfaction. I had a hard time finishing the chapters towards the end, as the content was making me feel uneasy. I know I should have just stopped reading, but I hate unfinished business. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who's easily disturbed or triggered, as it contains some truly graphic and disturbing content. If I hadn't already bought this one, I probably wouldn't have purchased it after reading it.
