My Cat's Ear Woes Are Finally Behind Us!

summarizeEditor's Summary

We've been dealing with our poor cat's ear issues for ages, and it's been a real challenge. We've tried everything from cleaning out the gunk to getting him vaccinated, but it wasn't until we found this product that we finally saw some real progress. The active ingredient diaphenyl diethylcarbamazine is a total game changer when it comes to getting rid of ear mites, and the prednisolone helps to soothe any irritation. It's been a lifesaver for our furry friend, and we're so glad we finally found something that works.

I'll be the first to admit, our poor cat had a tough start in life. It's no surprise he ended up with some ear issues when we brought him home. Born in not-so-great conditions, he was already quite grown when we adopted him. We've been dealing with caked-on black gunk in his ears for ages, and it took us a while to get him cleaned up. Vaccinations came next, and then it was time to tackle the pesky ear mites.
About the Product
The active ingredient, diaphenyl diethylcarbamazine, is a phosphororganic compound that's super effective against all stages of the mite's life cycle, including Otodectes cynotis, the parasite responsible for ear mite infestations in dogs and cats.
Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and antiallergic properties, which helps stabilize cell membrane permeability, prevents the release of inflammatory mediators, and has anti-pruritic and anti-edematous effects.
Each 20ml bottle is a decent size, and the price of 419 rubs in Russia isn't too shabby either.
Packaging
The drops are suitable for both dogs and cats, so the cardboard box has a picture of a dog on one side (with the Russian name) and a picture of a cat on the other (with the English name).
I didn't have any issues buying them; I just chose a store closer to home.
On the sides of the box, you'll find important info about what these drops are for and their composition.
There's also a detailed instruction on how to apply the drops correctly, as the dosage depends on the size of the animal.
I was impressed by the detailed instructions inside the box, which broke down everything on the packaging in a super clear way. Plus, there were all the contraindications listed.
Don't get me wrong, this stuff's not harmless, and I made sure to read everything before using it.
The plastic dropper bottle is opaque, and it was sealed really well when I opened it – I had to pry it open.
What It Looks Like
The drops are liquid, but not like water – more like a super-thin gel with a glycerin-like viscosity. They're slightly yellowish but transparent. The smell is pungent and medicinal, like a strong spirit.
Ingredients
According to the label, each 1ml contains 0.5mg of diazinon and 0.3mg of prednisolone as the active ingredients, along with glycerin and isopropyl alcohol as the inactive ingredients.
Since there's alcohol in the drops, I'd advise against using them if your cat has ear injuries or a perforated eardrum.
How We Used It
Following the instructions, I dropped 3 drops of Bar's into each ear twice. The first time, I had to clean the ears first – I've got a tried-and-tested ear cleaner for that, Rosinca, which does the trick.
Then, I carefully dropped the Bar's into each ear, but my cat wasn't having it – he hated the cleaning and the drops themselves. I had to grab him in both hands to keep him still while I massaged his ears for a few minutes. I did the same thing for the second treatment.
After the ordeal, my cat gave me some suspicious side-eye for a while, shaking his head and scratching behind his ear with his hind leg. Only one, for some reason. But within half an hour, he was back to his usual self.
I have to admit, it was a bit unsettling to see him scratch behind his ear and then lick that paw afterwards. I mean, those drops aren't harmless, but I couldn't find any info on potential risks. Luckily, it didn't seem to affect him.
We repeated the treatment six days later, and this time, his ears were almost spotless. We immediately followed up with a dose of Bar's drops.
It's been a couple of weeks now, and my cat hasn't been scratching his ears at all. They're clean, and I've only had to use a cotton swab to clean the inside once. I haven't needed to use the Rosin drops since. Both my cat and I are happy, and he's even become more affectionate, often sleeping next to me in an adorable pose.
My only concern is what to do with the remaining drops. There's enough for a small cat shelter to use twice over. The expiration date isn't flexible, so I'll have to dispose of them, which feels wasteful, considering the cost.
