The Marhaba Lounge at Dubai's Terminal 2 Airport: A Mixed Bag

summarizeEditor's Summary

We stopped by the Marhaba Lounge at Dubai's Terminal 2 airport after navigating the chaos of New Year's Eve. The lounge itself is tiny, but we managed to snag a spot when we arrived early. Unfortunately, they closed the lounge to new entries just five minutes later, leaving us wondering if it was worth the hassle. The lounge is a decent option if you're in a pinch, but it's not a game-changer by any means. With a little planning and patience, you can find better alternatives in the airport. To be honest, the lounge's best feature is its convenient location near the duty-free shops and restaurants. The staff is friendly and welcoming, even if the lounge itself is small. They offer a decent selection of snacks and drinks, including some nice Middle Eastern options. The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable, which is a must-have for any traveler. We got stuck in the New Year's chaos at Dubai airport. After navigating all the pre-flight adventures, we made a beeline for the business lounge.
The thing is, if you don't know, the lounge is tiny. If there's no queue at the entrance and you want to get in, don't hesitate - just go for it. The duty-free will wait, and I'll explain why in a minute.
When we entered the business lounge, there were only one or two people ahead of us.
We managed to snag almost the last table with chairs. And within five minutes, they closed the lounge to new entries.
To give you an idea, here's the size of the lounge. And the second terminal of the Dubai airport is just massive.
On the right side of the wall, there are three more tables with chairs, but they're permanently cordoned off because they're 'reserved.'
One table was left uncleaned for a while, which was a bit of a turn-off.
There's also a smoking lounge with a bar, but I didn't go there. My husband went to grab some drinks.
At the entrance to the non-smoking lounge, there are three small meeting rooms. I didn't take a photo, as they were occupied.
The separate toilet is a welcome respite from the main airport chaos.
On one of the walls, there are TV panels, but they weren't working - what a bummer. At least they could've shown some ads, and the constant chatter from all sides in different languages was overwhelming.
There's a counter with a decent selection of magazines for any taste.
That was the chaos we experienced during our time in the lounge.
As for food, I had mixed feelings. It's there, but the selection is limited and not very adapted to the average European palate. There's no kids' menu at all, which was a disappointment.
But there are drinks galore: a coffee machine with various coffee options, ten types of tea, numerous fizzy drinks, juices, and mineral water. Perrier and Evian mineral water, by the way, are ridiculously overpriced.
We ordered something like a pilaf, steamed rice, sandwiches, and a bun – you can see it on the photo with the pilaf in the bowl. Various salads, complex dishes, cakes, and pastries were also available, but we didn't try them.
From drinks, we had mineral water, fizzy drink, tea, a glass of wine, and a gin tonic with ice... wine and cocktail need to be ordered at the bar in the smoking lounge.
I have to say, the food at the airport was scorching hot and incredibly spicy. Even I, a self-proclaimed spice lover, couldn't handle it. It's definitely not suitable for kids.
We decided to head to the airport McDonald's for some tried-and-True fast food. But, let's be real, the prices at the Dubai airport McDonald's are intimidating, even for me.
By the way!
Don't forget to grab a boarding pass with a business lounge stamp if you want to exit and re-enter without waiting in line!
By the time we got to the business lounge, the line was already forming... and that was just a small part of the massive queue. It was at least 5-7 times bigger than that.
So, we ended up sitting in the business lounge with some local drinks and a blessed meal from McDonald's. The fries with red wine (and a bun to go with it) hit the spot perfectly.
Oh, and I just remembered - there was no cola or Pepsi with sugar in the business lounge. If you're watching your sugar intake, keep that in mind.
Let's summarize the pros and cons.
The business lounge at Marhaba has comfortable chairs and individual tables, which is a lot more comfortable than the general waiting area.
The separate toilet is a welcome respite from the main airport chaos.
They have a good selection of drinks and a decent selection of food.
The lounge is a lot quieter and more peaceful than the general waiting area.
The staff is friendly and customer-oriented.
Now, let's get to the negatives.
The lounge is ridiculously small for the airport (terminal). If you get in without a queue, consider yourself lucky. It's always like that.
The lounge is always packed, with no space to breathe. There are always tons of kids, and not all of them are well-behaved. I'm super tolerant of noise and love kids (read: I'm willing to put up with them), but it needs to be a more manageable number of people. Either expand the lounge or limit the number of visitors.
A part of the lounge is always roped off (I'm being a bit picky here, as it's a common practice everywhere, and it's annoying everywhere too).
The food selection is limited, not adapted, and there's no kids' menu. No cola without sugar substitutes (that's a big deal for me, for example).
There's no music, ambiance, or anything like that. It's just a cacophony of noise. I wanted to mute it all. This is definitely not a lounge in the classical sense.
There's no departure board. They don't announce boarding. But, at the same time, there's no quiet area. It's all just a mess.
They don't always clean up the dishes and trash right away.
I have to admit, every time I walk into this business center in Dubai, I get a weird feeling - how can a city as modern as this have such an outdated, cramped, and uncomfortable business space??
I spent a while thinking about my rating. Honestly, I'd give it 2.5 stars, but since it's still better than nothing, I'll go with 3. I mean, we've seen better and more comfortable business centers! Guys from the Emirates, please give it a makeover - you're capable of it!
