Best Day Ever (2015)

I'm a sucker for feel-good movies, and Best Day Ever (2015) delivers. The story's engaging, the characters are memorable, and it's the perfect pick for a chill evening in. You'll be hooked from start to finish, and it's a great way to unwind after a long day.

Dmitry Nagiyev's Comedy Falls Flat - A Major Disappointment

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really looking forward to Dmitry Nagiyev's comedy, but unfortunately, it's a total letdown. The plot is super predictable, the characters are one-dimensional, and the humor just doesn't land. I'm not saying it won't be a hit with the right crowd and some beer, but as a standalone film, it's just not worth watching. It's cheesy, predictable, and just not funny. The movie tries to be edgy, but it comes across as shallow and unengaging. The pacing is slow and plodding, making it hard to stay engaged. Overall, it's a disappointing watch.

I was really looking forward to this Russian comedy, but unfortunately, it's a total letdown. The plot is super predictable, the characters are one-dimensional, and the humor just doesn't land.
What really caught my attention was how many positive reviews this movie has on IMDB. I'm not saying it won't be a hit with the right crowd and some beer, but as a standalone film, it's just not worth watching. It's cheesy, predictable, and just not funny.
The title of this review came to me during the movie, when Nagiev's character was yelling at his girlfriend, saying something like 'now someone's going to get screwed over' and 'let's get drunk.' That's the kind of humor we see in modern Russian cinema - senseless and merciless.
About the movie:
Successful traffic cop Pete Vasutyn has been putting off starting a family for far too long, and he still lives with his mom, who runs a roadside café. And there's a fiancée - the queen of the gas station, cashier Olya. On the day when Pete decides to propose to Olya, his work car gets into an accident with a drunk pop star, Alina Shopot. To avoid getting in trouble, Alina decides to seduce Pete...
Starring: Dmitry Nagiev, Julia Alexandrova, Olga Seriabkina, Inna Churikova, Mikhail Boyarsky, Elena Yakovleva, Vladislav Vetrev, Valentina Mazunina, Yan Tsapnik, Andrey Malakhov.
Humor is pretty lowbrow. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty lenient when it comes to this kind of stuff. But there's a fine line between clever sarcasm and just being plain unfunny. I mean, take Kevin Smith's movies - they're clever and witty. But then there are movies like The Best Day Ever, which just falls flat.
Characters - they're all pretty much the same. I mean, they're all just a bunch of degenerates. They're all just drinking, cursing, and acting like total idiots. I didn't find it funny watching them. And that one scene where the drunk cop crashes into Pete's car and then proceeds to pee in the field with her middle finger raised? Yeah, that's just the pinnacle of modern humor. Pete, on the other hand, is just a total doormat. He's just a pushover who's always getting taken advantage of. I mean, he's always covering for the drunk cop and even gives her more booze. What a guy! I guess the only redeeming quality is the mom's sympathy for the bride. I mean, she's just so clueless and her mom is always talking about how she's not the only one Pete's dated. Yeah, that's just the kind of humor I can get behind.
When I'm holding the camera, the footage is shaky, like the operator's got a bad case of the wobbles. Watching it for the first 10-15 minutes is a bit of a strain, but after that, your eyes adjust.
The atmosphere is right out of a Russian comedy, like Gor'koe, but with, you know, half-naked women.
Alcoholism is rampant! Some of the characters even joke about how their medication won't work if they drink, which is just a sad commentary on the state of things. And, of course, every drunk thinks they're a rockstar and feels the need to belt out a tune. And then there's the obligatory drunk-driving scene – because, why not?
The Tverk scene on the side of the road at the end of the movie was a pleasant surprise – there wasn't even a single curse word in sight.
I have to say, the final song was a bit of a weird note to end on. It reminded me of those Indian dance numbers from that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs rip-off movie that came out recently.
Honestly, I'd give The Best Day of My Life 1 star. It's just not worth the low effort and trashy content. What's going on with these Christmas movies, anyway?
