A Desperate Housewives-Inspired Thriller Falls Short of the Mark

summarizeEditor's Summary

This Desperate Housewives-inspired thriller had me hooked from the start, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The author, Seraphina Nova Glass, does a great job of capturing the atmosphere of the show, but the plot falls flat in places. I was expecting a more suspenseful and engaging story, but what I got was a predictable and somewhat formulaic ride. If you're a fan of the show, you might enjoy this book, but it's not a must-read by any means.

Hello everyone!
I recently re-watched the TV series Desperate Housewives and shared my thoughts on it. And, coincidentally, I stumbled upon this book that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the show.
I found it in a mystery book box, where you don't know what you're getting until you open it. I had ordered it a while back, and I had forgotten what it was about. But as soon as I opened it, I was hit with a wave of references and nods to the housewives of Wisteria Lane, which I had just finished watching and was still reeling from. It was like getting to extend that experience.
This book is by American author Seraphina Nova Glass, titled Stillhouse Lake, and even the paper on the cover from the publisher playfully refers to it as Housewives Driven to Desperation.
The text immediately sets the scene for a perfect, upscale suburban neighborhood. But, of course, something's off - a young man dies under suspicious circumstances.
His mother, Paige, is still reeling a year later and takes out her frustrations on her neighbors, spying on them with binoculars because she's convinced the killer is among them. She's got a perfect lawn and a fake smile, but you can tell she's not okay.
I have a neighbor and friend, Cora, who's basically the female version of Bree from Desperate Housewives - the kind of woman everyone wishes they had in their lives. She's gorgeous, kind, and her house is always spotless. But, as usual, her husband's not satisfied with her, and he's always looking elsewhere. He makes her feel guilty for being suspicious, but honestly, I think she's got every right to be.
Recently, a new girl moved in next door, and Cora's trying to befriend her, but she's not making it easy. Georgia's a young mom with a baby on her hip, and she never leaves the house. Her husband says it's agoraphobia and panic attacks, but I'm not so sure. Maybe she's just trapped in that beautiful house of hers.
The story revolves around these three women and their families, with each chapter alternating between their perspectives. The main plot is, of course, the investigation into Paige's son's murder, but we also get glimpses into the other women's secrets. It's a classic setup, and I was expecting more.
I might have had high expectations because I recently re-watched the show that inspired this series, and I was blown away. Unfortunately, this one didn't quite live up to the hype.
The writing's not bad, but the descriptions of the setting and characters were so lacking that I never really felt immersed in the story. At first, the plot was somewhat engaging, but it quickly devolved into a confusing mess.
I was surprised to find that I didn't guess the ending this time, and it wasn't because the author got too complicated - no, the whole story is pretty straightforward and on the surface.
What really surprised me is that this book became a bestseller in some big thriller list, and everyone's raving about it. As a middle-of-the-road detective thriller, it's not bad - it's a good way to kill a couple of evenings, but that's about it.
My personal take is that the people raving about this book probably haven't read any good detective stories. Like I said, everything's too on the surface, and the supposed twists feel pretty obvious - it's like watching a soap opera. I didn't get any sense of immersion in the town or the main characters.
I read the book pretty quickly, in just one day, which sounds like a plus, and it was easy to get through with some interest, but it didn't leave me with any emotions or a desire to go back and think about certain moments. It's a book I read and forgot - literally.
Rating: 3/5 stars
I'd say this book is a decent, but not outstanding, read. It's a good option if you're looking for a quick, easy thriller, but it doesn't bring anything new or exciting to the table. If you're expecting a complex and engaging story, you might want to look elsewhere.
Recommendation:
If you're a fan of detective thrillers and want a quick, easy read, this book might be a good choice. However, if you're looking for something more complex and engaging, you might want to consider other options.
Pros:
Easy to get through Quick read Decent plot
Cons:
Lacking descriptions of setting and characters Too on the surface Supposed twists feel obvious
Thanks for reading my review!
