My Take on Robert Lichello's Method for Beating Depression

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've been meaning to share my thoughts on Robert Lichello's book, Defeat Depression Before It Defeats You. As someone who's struggled with depression, I was blown away by the author's extensive experience working with people and the practical techniques he shares. One hour with a psychologist can cost 10 times more, but this book offers a wealth of information and methods that are worth every penny. For me, the answer is a resounding yes – it's a total game changer. I've found the book to be super helpful in understanding depression and its causes, and the techniques and recommendations are practical and easy to follow. The author's credentials are impressive, with 30 years of experience working with depression, and it shows in the book. I've been using the techniques and methods from the book for a while now, and I've seen some real progress. Of course, it's not a magic pill, and it's not a substitute for professional help, but it's a great resource to have in your toolkit. I'm sharing my honest thoughts on the book's quality, what helped me, and what didn't. You can make up your own mind if it's worth the investment.

I'm sharing my honest thoughts on the book's quality, what helped me, and what didn't. You can make up your own mind if it's worth the investment.
For me, the answer is a resounding yes.
One hour with a psychologist can cost 10 times more, but this book offers recommendations, techniques, and methods from a professor who's worked with depression for 30 years. His credentials are impressive, but what matters most to me is his extensive experience working with people.
Defeat Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, review
I discovered the book on our Apple News feed and immediately checked it out on Amazon.
I could've gone for the paperback version at a lower price, but I knew I'd want to refer to it often and work through its exercises.
So, I splurged on the hardcover for my mental health's sake.

Book format and print quality.
The book is standard size, but it's quite thick – 2 cm high:
Defeat Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, reviewThe cover is hard:
Defeat Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, reviewThe paper isn't white; it's slightly yellowish, but it feels nice to the touch. The font is clear, black, and not too small, which is important to me.
In the table of contents, we see 13 chapters on various psychology topics related to depression:
Defeat Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, reviewI don't read books like this linearly. I choose the topic that's relevant and timely for me. So, some chapters remain unread, while others are re-read multiple times.

What I was expecting from the book.
I'd already told you how Carnegie's book helped me deal with my inner demons. I was expecting something similar from this one, but with more, given Lichello's reputation as a specialist and practitioner.
Beating Depression Before It Beats You, Robert Lichello, reviewMy friend, a psychologist, said, 'Why do you need this book? You don't have depression.'
It was weird to hear that, especially:
preventing illnesses is just as important as treating them. But Lichello said I have the symptoms of depression. You can check for yourself with the following symptoms:
feeling worthless or guilty, trouble concentrating or making decisions, fatigue or loss of energy, insomnia or hypersomnia, loss of appetite, weight gain or loss, restlessness or lethargy, thoughts of death or suicide.
Beating Depression Before It Beats You, Robert Lichello, reviewIf you have at least four of these symptoms, then welcome to our depression club.
Lichello has a test to assess our state.
As the author says, depression comes in different forms and degrees, including what's called mild depression.
I'm a pretty anxious person, prone to numerous fears, complexes, and stressors.
Beating Depression Before It Beats You, Robert Lichello, reviewI'd say my state is chronic because sometimes I'm better, sometimes worse.
Please note that my opinion is subjective and non-professional. I'm just an average person trying to help myself in any way I can. I've studied psychology since school, but as an amateur. I'm self-taught in theory, methods, and practices, and I apply and test them on myself.
Beating Depression Before It Beats You, Robert Lichello, review
🌚 As written.
The writing is easy to read. The style is similar to that of Carnegie's books. To make the text not seem dry to the reader, there are characters like Karen, Tom, and Linda.
"Everything seems so hopeless, - said Karen... - I find it hard to get up in the mornings... I've got nothing more to look forward to in life."
But they're quite schematic, more like archetypes than real people.
Beating Depression Before It Beats You, Robert Lichello, review🌚 The author's techniques.
Let's take an example from one chapter about ruminations, i.e., obsessive thoughts.
Before that, the author piques our interest, saying he'll give us powerful techniques to fight ruminations. In the conclusion, he says he's offered many ways to break the vicious cycle of obsessive thoughts.
But what techniques did we actually get?
To put it briefly, we got
Tracking rumination. Recording and dissecting thoughts, what they are and what they mean. Shifting attention. Noticing, observing, and feeling the real world. Acceptance. In the attention-shifting exercise, there's a mindful breathing exercise. That's it.
The book is structured in a similar way.
I'm familiar with these techniques. I'm not disputing they work. But I was expecting to read about something new and more powerful.
Defeating Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, review
I liked that, like Carnegie, each chapter ends with conclusions. Psychologists don't give advice; they call it methods. These methods/recommendations are compiled in a summary:
Defeating Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, review✨ My take.
Robert Lichello offers hope that depression can be prevented and overcome in his book. Along with theory, he provides some methods, exercises, and techniques for this.
Defeating Depression Before It Defeats You, Robert Lichello, reviewThe author successfully treated depressive disorders for 30 years.
But I was expecting more from the book than I got.
Lichello's methods are simple and familiar to me. For example, recording thoughts and problems, attention-shifting exercises, and mindfulness, and so on.
Conquering Depression Before It Conquers You, Robert Lichello, ReviewI've got to say, this book has really helped me tackle my own mental health issues, despite a few minor quirks.
Don't wait for someone else to save you - you've got the power to save yourself.
I'd definitely recommend giving it a read.
