summarizeEditor's Summary

I went into 'Crazy Date' expecting a lighthearted comedy, but what I got was a cleverly crafted exploration of the human mind. The film's unique concept of a couple's inner monologues had me hooked from the start. With its witty dialogue and unexpected twists, 'Crazy Date' is a must-watch for anyone looking for a fresh take on the romantic comedy genre. The cast delivers impressive performances, bringing depth and nuance to their characters, and the film's camera work is smooth and visually appealing, adding to the overall charm. While it may not be perfect, the film's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. Overall, 'Crazy Date' is a delightful surprise that will keep you laughing and thinking long after the credits roll.

I was in the mood for a comedy, but the options were limited, so I decided to check out the 2025 Italian comedy Follemente (which translates to 'Crazy Dates' in English), directed by Paolo Genovese, who was awarded the best comedy of the year by the Italian Association of Film Critics.
Plot:
In the center of the film is a couple, Lara and Piero, on their first date. But on this date, they're not alone - each of them has their own 'support group' in their head, a visualization of the voices and thoughts that go through their minds. It's a concept that's been done before, but it's still an interesting take.
In Piero's head, there's Eros, a sex-driven and confident guy; Romeo, a romantic; Professor, a rational thinker; and Valtium, a thrill-seeker. It's a similar setup in Lara's head, with Tinker Bell, a quirky and fun-loving character; Zanossa, a sarcastic and critical voice; Alpha, a confident and outgoing personality; and Juliet, a romantic and dreamy one. Camera work and direction:
Director Paolo Genovese is known for his work on 'Perfect Strangers', which was remade by Quartet-I as 'The Loud Connection'. So, I was expecting an interesting and decent film.
This film is shot in one location, Lara's apartment, with the exception of the two rooms where the 'support group' resides. It focuses on dialogue, with an emphasis on the emotions and feelings of the couple. The main idea is to show the conflicting thoughts of the characters in real-time on their first date. But, overall, it's nothing new - it's been done before with voiceovers or angel and devil imagery. Main characters and acting:
I've gotta say, I'm not familiar with the actors, so I didn't have any other projects to compare them to, but they did a great job here. The adults in this movie, who are all over 30, have their own past and experience, their own fears and triggers, but they all still get nervous on the first date, sometimes act out of character.
Lara (Pilar Folgueira) - a 35-year-old woman invites a guy to her place for their first date, which, in my opinion, is a weird choice for a first date. She's trying to look confident on the outside, but her head is a mess, and she's all over the place. Lara's been in some weird, unfulfilling relationship for a year, and she even froze her eggs (which, in my opinion, is a weird topic to bring up on a first date). She's got some weird behaviors, like getting all worked up when she finds out the guy has a kid over 40.
She's pretty temperamental, but after that, the date doesn't end - in fact, there's a warm feeling and trust between the two characters. But honestly, Lara's character gives me mixed feelings, and overall, she comes across as an impulsive person.
Piero (Edoardo Leo) - the guy is about 10 years older than Lara. He looks awkward and even shy at the beginning, but he's trying to be funny, charming, and bold. His character is actually really relatable to me, and his motivations are more understandable, especially compared to Lara's. His uncertainty and even a bit of teenage awkwardness don't bother me - he seems like a guy who's been burned before and is scared of making another mistake.
I won't get into the voices in their heads, but the characters are well-written and well-acted, and you can easily tell what kind of people they are.
My first impressions:
I didn't expect any melodrama, and the comedy was pretty weak too. I think it's just a matter of different mentalities, and the jokes just didn't land. A lot of the situations and dialogue were just not funny, and there was no sense of relatability – I didn't see myself or anyone I know in those moments.
The main thing that let me down was the lack of chemistry between the leads. The themes were all clear and well-explored, but they just didn't feel lived-in on screen – there was a lack of emotion.
I wouldn't say the movie was bad, but it didn't do much for me – I didn't feel any strong emotions, drama, or humor. It was just a bit meh, but not in a bad way. I'm curious to see if they'll remake it again.
