Witch Baba Yaga's Lawyer by Evgeniya Nekrasova

This novel by Evgeniya Nekrasova is a wild ride - think magic, mystery, and more twists than a Russian nesting doll. I'm talking non-stop suspense, unexpected surprises, and a story that'll keep you guessing till the very end.

A Collection of Short Stories to Keep You Thinking

summarizeEditor's Summary

I dove into this collection of short stories by Yevgenia Nekrasova and was blown away. The writing's straightforward, but the themes are anything but straightforward. You'll zip through the book in one sitting, but the ideas will linger in your head for days. The author's style is engaging, and the stories are thought-provoking. If you're looking for something to keep you thinking, this is it. The book's a bit of a departure from her previous work, but it's a great departure. It's like a breath of fresh air, and I'm hooked. I loved how the author tackled complex themes and ideas, keeping me engaged from start to finish. The writing's surprisingly accessible, making it easy to get lost in the stories. The book's a wild ride, and I'm still thinking about it long after I finished reading.

Hello everyone!
I've already had the chance to meet the author through her book 'Kalechka-Malechka.' It's a really deep and thought-provoking book, but the writing is surprisingly straightforward and easy to follow. You can zip through it in one sitting.
I've also read her other book, but this one's a bit of a departure - it's a collection of short stories.
"The Witch's Advocate" by Yevgenia Nekrasova
Location: Wildberriez Number of pages: 254 Age rating: 18+
First Impressions
The book comes in a softcover format, with a bright, eye-catching cover design. The acid-green color really stands out, and the illustration is pretty unique. On a bright green background, there's a pink, clawed hand with a heart-shaped ring, and a little UFO flying off into the distance. The title font is big and tactile, really inviting.
On the back, you'll find a description of the content. The back cover is white, with gray, flimsy pages and a huge empty border around the text. But the font size is comfortable, which is a relief – lately, everyone's been publishing with ridiculously small text, and my eyes get tired quickly. The book includes a couple of black-and-white illustrations. What's the book about?
These short stories are infused with mystery or just life. The characters and situations are diverse, and so is the perspective.
My thoughts
I'll try to put into words my feelings about the stories in this book:
Unsettling.
I loved how the main character was portrayed - I totally get her and what she's about. The ending was a bit fuzzy, but overall, I'd give the story 10 out of 10 for its overall impact. There's plenty to think about, and some of the ideas will stick with you for a while. It's a story that's more about life than magic. It's super easy and quick to read. It's a great tale.
Princess
This story didn't quite hit the mark for me. I think it's mainly because of the theme - war is the main character in this story, and I'm not a fan of that. The tension builds up, the situation is heavy, and the descriptions are quite specific. It's all a bit too simple, even to the point of being a bit primitive. Despite that, the idea itself is complex and mature. It's a decent story, but it's darker and more intense than the previous one.
The Girl and the Bear
This story is about an alternate reality where animals live like humans. They even have weird collections. I love how the author conveys complex ideas with simple language.
I mean, I'd never be a bear girl like that. 4 out of 5 stars.
Ega-bicha and Her Native Speech
This is a funny story about Baba Yaga and her unusual pet. It's a really fresh take on things. The story's divided into small parts, and it's got a lot of dynamics and surreal moments.
House Leshy
Another story that's deeper than it seems at first glance. It explores the life of a house spirit, digging into the soul of the house and understanding its inner workings. It's got a bit of politics, misconceptions passed down from generation to generation, scaring, friendship, and how other people and situations affect us. It's a great, deep, and powerful story!
Ega-bicha and Pele
Unfortunately, this story didn't really do it for me. There are some pretty disturbing, unpleasant, and gross moments. The ending's not great either. The surrealism's gone a bit too far, and it's all just a bit too much.
Boys for Pele
This story's about the personal life of the fiery goddess, Pele. It's divided into parts, each focusing on a different man. The stories are all a bit unusual, but they're not really about a specific plot. They're just as quirky as the rest of the author's work. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars.
Her North
I've got to say, I was intrigued by the story of this girl who lived in the north. She loved the place, even when it didn't love her back.
Mothers and Children
This story starts off gentle, but ends up going nowhere. It's about a photographer in a maternity ward, her work, and her personal life. It's interesting, but ultimately, it's about nothing. It's a bit sad, really realistic, but also kind of empty.
The Girl is Bored
This one's a dark, creepy tale about befriending the dead.
Her Cosmos
I have to be honest, I really didn't enjoy this story. It's dark, depressing, harsh, and brutal.
It's neither realistic nor fantastical. I'd say this is my least favorite in the collection.
It's a bit of a mixed bag, but that's what makes it so interesting.
Each story is unique and has its own flavor. Some are more thought-provoking, while others are just plain fun.
This collection is a great read for anyone who loves short stories and is looking for something a bit different.
So, if you're in the mood for something that'll keep you thinking, then this is the book for you.
Thanks for reading, and I'll see you around irecommend!
