I'm a worrier, and I've always been a bit paranoid about getting older. Everywhere I look, there's some new age range where our skin starts to show signs of aging. So, at 27, I started noticing what looked like a wrinkle forming on my forehead. Nobody else seemed to notice, but I could see it.
After doing some research online, I decided to give collagen a try. I figured it was time to think about getting older, and I wanted to do something about it. Collagen is the main structural protein found in connective tissue in the human body. It's a key component of skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Even hair, muscles, and vital organs are made up of collagen.
Collagen is also found in significant amounts in the dermal layer of the skin. It's the dermal layer, along with elastin, that gives skin its elasticity, strength, and ability to stretch. The condition of this layer determines how skin looks: smooth and youthful or old and wrinkled.
After the age of 25, the body's production of collagen begins to slow down, and collagen fibers start to lose their ability to return to their original shape. By the time we hit 40, collagen production decreases by 1-3% each year. Over the course of five years after menopause, the skin loses around 30% of its collagen.
I tried collagen for the first time, and it wasn't great. I bought some tablets, beef collagen, which I had to take three times a day. But I'm not exactly a morning person, and I didn't see any results by the end of the course. Then, I stumbled upon this powder, 'Exclusiv iHerb', which was being heavily promoted on the iherb website, and I decided to order it for my 28th birthday. I mean, the reviews from real customers on iherb were pretty good – an average rating of 4.4.
So, why did I choose this collagen over the others? I was convinced by its ingredients: it's fish-derived collagen, not beef, and it's actually pretty affordable. It's believed that collagen produced from fish skin is more similar to human collagen in terms of its biochemical composition, making it easier to absorb. And, on a personal level, I can say that it worked better for me. Plus, it comes with vitamin C, which helps collagen absorption, and hyaluronic acid.

I wasn't a fan of mixing the powder with water – it's just not my thing. There's no fishy flavor, but there's a weird aftertaste that I didn't enjoy. It's easy to mask with juice, though – I mix it with a multi-fruit juice and I'm good to go. It's not hard to mix with a spoon, but it takes a bit of effort if you're using a regular spoon like I do. Some people complain about the smell, but I don't notice it.
The juice before and after mixingThe hardest part for me, as a true hamster, is not eating it within two hours of taking it and an hour after. The recommended dosage is one bottle for three months, and I managed to stretch it a bit longer. I'm planning to repeat the process in six months for preventative measures.
So, the pros:

- My old knee injury no longer acts up with the weather changes.
- I feel like my hair is falling out less.
The cons:
- I didn't notice any significant anti-aging effects – I'm still rocking my one wrinkle.
- I read somewhere that collagen can help reduce cellulite or stretch marks. After two weeks of dry-brushing with a hard-bristled brush, my cellulite has become much less noticeable than it was during the three months I was taking collagen. As for stretch marks, I didn't notice any difference.
