I'm a huge fan of Colin Farrell, and I was really looking forward to checking out his latest film, 'Ballad of a Small Player'. The story sounded intriguing: it's about addiction, dependence, Macau, luxury, and deception. But, unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations in the end.

His last hope is the woman Dao Min, who lends money to losing players, but she mysteriously disappears.
At first, the film blows you away with its style - it's literally sparkling with neon lights, reflections in shop windows, and the atmosphere of a nighttime city. Macau is portrayed as a paradox: a paradise for gamblers and a hell for those who've lost everything.
But the more you watch, the more you feel like there's emptiness lurking beneath all the glamour. The main character, Lord Doyle, is more than just a player - he's a person who's drowning in his own illusions. He's got the costumes, the mannerisms, the confidence. But take a closer look, and you'll see he's drowning in debt, hiding from creditors, and trying to cheat fate with one more hand of blackjack.
Colin Farrell's performance is top-notch. His eyes convey a sense of exhaustion, panic, and almost physical pain. I believed every gesture, every breath. And it's probably his performance that's the main reason to stick with the film till the end.
The film introduces us to two women - Dao Min and Cynthia Blight. Dao Min, played by Chen Fang-Yu, is the enigmatic figure who helps Doyle with his financial troubles, but remains a mystery. There's definitely some chemistry between them, but the script seems hesitant to explore that storyline further.
Cynthia, played by Tilda Swinton, shows up later to unravel Doyle's past. Swinton is, as always, on point, but her character feels more like a plot device than a fully fleshed-out person. And that's one of the main issues with the film: the characters are there, but they don't feel like real people.
The first thirty minutes of the film are actually really strong. You feel the desperation, you recognize yourself in some of the moments - if you've ever been that guy who thinks just one more try, and everything will change. But then, the storyline just disappears on you. At first, it's like watching a poorly constructed dream.
Visually, everything's been shot beautifully. The image, lighting, and editing are all expertly done, and the camerawork literally drops you into the neon whirlpool of Macao.
But when the beauty of the shot becomes more important than the content, the film turns into a postcard - a very pretty, but empty one.
At some point, I caught myself getting bored. Despite the drama of the topic and the level of the actors, the story suddenly becomes dull and predictable.
Everything's just too obvious - the losses, the promises, the new stakes, a bit more desperation, and a finale that doesn't even leave you with a hint of catharsis or mild sadness. Just nothing.
In theory, Ballad of a Small Player had everything to be a major event of the year: a star-studded cast, a strong director, and a powerful theme. But in practice, it's a beautiful, but cold film that leaves no impression.
This is a film that I genuinely want to love, but just can't. It's beautiful, expensive, with a great cast, but it's lacking heart.
I'd say it's a game without stakes: it's all done by the book, but the emotions just don't engage. If you're a fan of Colin Farrell, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. Everyone else can skip this new release without missing out on anything important.
