A Red Delight That Won't Burn Your Eyes, But Brighten Them Up Instead

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a bit late to the party, but I just had to share my experience with these stunning Coleus Blumei Giant Exhibition Rustik Red seeds. I bought them at Seedpost in February 2021 for 72 rubles, and as of today, they're around 73-75 rubles. The packaging is gorgeous, but the description is a bit lacking - you'll need to check the seller's website for more info. I've been growing these babies for a while now, and I'm hooked. The Coleus Blumei Giant Exhibition Rustik Red is a total game changer for any garden. Not only is it a beautiful addition, but it's also super easy to care for. I've had zero issues with my plants, and I'm confident you will too. If you're looking for a low-maintenance, high-reward plant, look no further. This one's worth every penny, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a plant enthusiast - it's genuinely a great value for money.

I wrote this review a bit late, because I wanted to post it on March 8th, but the Historical Museum was open that day, and I just couldn't resist.
Price and where I bought it
I paid 72 rubles for the Coleus Blumei Giant Exhibition Rustik Red seeds at Seedpost in February 2021. As of today, it's a bit more, around 73-75 rubles.
The seeds and their description
The packaging is beautiful, but not very informative. They're from Japan, and the seed variety is called Coleus Blumei Giant Exhibition Rustik Red. I wish the detailed description was available right here, but I had to go to the seller's website to get all the information.
The seller's website has a ton of positive reviews, all giving the plant a perfect 10 out of 10. The seeds themselves are tiny and hard to spot in their transparent packaging.
Cultivation
The manufacturer recommends not rushing things. I wish I had taken that advice, because I did rush things a bit.
Sow the seeds in March-May for a head start.
Sow them on the surface, without burying them under glass.
Germination takes about 10-12 days.
Once the seedlings have developed their first leaves, transfer them to individual pots.
When they reach about 7-8 cm tall, give them a bit of a trim to keep them bushy.
Transplant them into the ground in early June, leaving about 25 cm between each plant.
For healthy growth, make sure they get regular watering, weeding, and fertilization.
They love sunlight, but don't put them in direct sunlight. They prefer partial shade or dappled shade.
Height: up to 50 cm.
Width: 12-16 cm.
My experience growing it
I managed to get only one seedling to germinate by the end of February, and by March 6th, it had already started to grow. My germination rate was a pretty dismal 33.33%.
So, by the end of May, it looked like this.
I probably should have pruned it earlier, but I was holding out for something more exciting. From what I can see, it's just a bigger version of the regular coleus.
I was surprised by how quickly this coleus started branching out after pinching. The top section developed roots in no time.
Eventually, when the weather warmed up, I moved them to the porch, and that's when they really started to thrive. Initially, they looked a bit pale. But they quickly started flowering.
It wasn't until later that they started to develop some real color in their leaves and started to look like the picture.
On cloudy days, it's not as noticeable, but in the sun, they're a vibrant red.
They stayed looking great until the end of summer, at which point they lost their appeal and were eventually disposed of.
Pros and Cons
Other than average germination rates, I didn't experience any major drawbacks.
Their decorative value was exactly as promised when they were exposed to sunlight.
They grew, multiplied, and developed roots incredibly quickly.
They branched out well.
While they only reached about 50cm in height, I'm confident they would have reached their full potential in a well-drained outdoor environment. As for the width, I can confirm they reached 12-16cm, no question.
I think the issues I had with this plant were more down to my own care rather than any inherent flaws in the plant itself - poor timing with pruning, not giving them enough room to breathe in the soil, and neglecting to remove the flowers... but I do love those little blue flowers!
Conclusion
While their germination rates were a bit of a letdown, I think this Coleus Blume Giant Exhibition Rastic Red Elite Seeds (Takii Seed) could still be worth considering for its decorative value and potential size.
