My Amazing Coleus 'Avatar' Experience: A Total Game Changer for Your Garden!
Hello there! I'm super into flowering plants and shrubs, but let's not forget about decorative foliage plants like coleus. They add a pop of color to your garden and home in the summer. Among the many coleus varieties, 'Avatar' is seriously one of the most beautiful.
Coleus plants are divided into two types - those that can be grown from seeds and those that can't. 'Avatar' falls into the second category, so you won't be able to grow this beauty from seeds. I scored a few cuttings for free at a local garden market, which was a nice bonus.
Planting.
I stuck the cuttings in water and after a week, they developed white roots. This is a super common and reliable way to propagate coleus. It's a great way to multiply your plants and share them with friends and family.
After transplanting to 'pint-sized' glasses, they lived on my windowsill for a month. They got plenty of sunlight, water, and were a bit cramped, so they grew quite long. I even tried pruning them, but it didn't help. However, there were plenty of side shoots developing on the stem.
A blurry photo of my 'Avatar' coleus on the day I planted it. Notice how long it's grown already! Side shoots developing on the stem It wasn't until I planted them in the ground that the 'Avatar' coleus showed its true colors. By this time, they had grown quite long, so I planted them sideways, burying the stem in soil. And it worked like a charm! The stem rooted, the side shoots grew upwards, and my 'Avatar' coleus became a lush, vibrant plant.

Care and Maintenance.
Coleus plants aren't picky about soil, but they do love well-draining, fertile ground. 'Avatar' responds beautifully to fertilizers and regular watering. It grows rapidly and reaches its peak in late July to early August. The bigger the plant, the larger its leaves.
Lighting.
Most coleus varieties can tolerate shade, but 'Avatar' needs some sunlight to develop its unique leaf pattern. I placed it in a spot that received direct sunlight from morning till around 10-11 am, then it was in partial shade for the rest of the day. It was the perfect combination for this coleus. Another cutting I had was in full sun and it struggled to grow and develop its color.
A close-up of the leaf pattern from July 29th I'm totally hooked on this coleus and plan to plant a group of them in my garden this season. They're a real showstopper! I managed to save some cuttings from last autumn and they're doing great in a small pot, just requiring regular watering.
I really love this coleus and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to add some color and vibrancy to their garden or balcony. It's a total game changer! There are many other beautiful coleus varieties out there, like 'Rainbow Combat' or 'Perilla', but 'Avatar' stands out from the crowd.
Coleus 'Rainbow Combat' Thanks for reading my review!
Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with the 'Avatar' coleus. Its unique leaf pattern and vibrant colors make it a standout in any garden or indoor space. With proper care and maintenance, it's a low-maintenance plant that will bring joy and beauty to your life.
One thing to note is that 'Avatar' is a bit more sensitive to light than other coleus varieties. Make sure to provide it with the right amount of sunlight, and it will reward you with stunning foliage.
I've had the pleasure of growing several coleus varieties, but 'Avatar' is by far my favorite. Its beauty and uniqueness make it a must-have for any plant enthusiast.
So, if you're looking to add some excitement to your garden or indoor space, I highly recommend giving the 'Avatar' coleus a try. You won't be disappointed!
Happy planting!
