A Hit and Miss with Great Quality and Some Surprising Issues with the Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs Eyeshadows

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've had the Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs eyeshadows in 02 Rosewood Gradation for a year now, and I've got mixed feelings about them. On one hand, the colors are rich and pigmented, and the palette itself is beautifully designed. The packaging is sturdy and looks great on my makeup counter. I've been really impressed with the value for money, especially since I snagged it on sale. However, I've encountered some issues with the shadows themselves, which can be a bit of a letdown. Some of the shadows can be a bit chalky and difficult to work with, and the blendability could be better. I've also noticed that some of the shadows can be a bit too powdery and prone to fallout. The eyeshadow applicator that comes with the palette is a bit flimsy, but the price is still reasonable. The shade 02 is a gorgeous, neutral brown that's perfect for everyday wear. I've been using it for a week and the build quality has surprised me - the buttons feel solid and the battery lasts longer than I expected. Overall, I'd say it's worth considering, especially if you can find it on sale.

I've been eyeing the Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs eyeshadows for a while, and I finally got my hands on the 4-pan palette in 02 Rosewood Gradation. It's been a year now, and I've got some thoughts to share.

Full Name:
Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs in 02 Rosewood Gradation

Price was 51 euros full price, but I managed to snag it with a 70% discount for 15.30 euros, which is roughly 1500 rubles. The price is now 53 euros, but I've never seen such a deep discount on these palettes. I thought they were being discontinued, but it seems they're still available. Although, I did notice that my shade, 02, is harder to find now, but the other shades are still available on their official website.

Country of Origin: Italy.
Shelf Life after opening isn't specified, which is a bit strange. Maybe there was a paper insert that I accidentally lost.

Packaging.
The eyeshadows come in a sturdy cardboard box, similar to the Shiseido packaging I've seen before. There's no powder puff included, unlike their older design with red velvet pouches for the eyeshadows and powder. The eyeshadows themselves have a modern and fresh design.

I was excited to find a solid plastic insert with a great sponge for applying eyeshadow - a nice touch from Clarins. I usually toss out this insert from other brands, but I left it in this time and even kept the sponge, which does a fantastic job of applying shadows.

Now, let's talk about the eyeshadows themselves.
I've been using the Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs in 02 Rosewood Gradation for a while now, and I think I picked it up from the Stockmann store. After a year of use, I've formed a solid opinion from multiple makeup looks.
First off, the quality of these eyeshadows is great. The texture is pleasant, not too dry, and there's a moderate level of powderiness. They apply smoothly, blend easily, and the different shades mix together seamlessly. I didn't notice any fallout when applying or throughout the day.
As for longevity, these eyeshadows hold up all day, even without a primer, which is a major plus for me. With a primer, the look lasts even longer and looks more polished, but even without it, the results are still satisfactory.

Now, let's talk about the shades in 02 Rosewood Gradation. They're all satin, and I initially thought they'd be more neutral and suitable for everyday makeup looks. But the thing is, skin tone matters. My skin is super light, almost porcelain, and on me, this palette looks more like an evening option. The colors are beautiful, harmonious, and the combination of shades works well, but for skin with a medium tone, I think this palette would be more versatile and show its true potential.

When you first look at the palette, it might seem like there are two light and two dark shades, but that's not the case. When I applied the colors, they turned out to be really vibrant:

So, to give you an idea of the tone, I converted the photo to black and white:

What you get are three shades that are almost identical in tone, with the darkest one being a deeper brown. But overall, I don't see any light shades that would be suitable for my skin tone. I'm a porcelain doll, and I think girls with a similar skin tone might find these colors too vibrant. They'd probably need to choose a palette that's 2-3 shades lighter.

My makeup looks.

I've gotta say, the color mix is getting interesting now - the pink shades are taking over:
* The tone is super polarizing for me - I can wear it, but it's not my favorite, it's more of a solo lower pink shade.
But these palettes with the pink and beige mix are more my speed:
This is the combo of upper pink and beige.
This same look in natural light.
The makeup removal is a breeze - I'm using my regular makeup remover wipes, and it's clear that the eyeshadows are staying put:
One thing that's really put me off is the price without a discount. I probably wouldn't have bought it at full price. And another thing that's bugged me over time is that the eyeshadow refills have started to get a bit dry. It's not affecting the quality of the makeup yet, but it's a fact.
The eyeshadows now look really weird, the color just flakes off the top of the packaging. Meanwhile, the shadows are just sitting in my makeup drawer, I haven't taken this palette on the go (it's not exactly travel-friendly, anyway):
I'm not sure if it's a one-off, but high-end eyeshadows usually don't mess up the packaging like this.
Overall, Clarins Ombre 4 Couleurs 02 Rosewood Gradation is a great product with a lovely color palette and comfortable texture. I'd definitely buy it again, but unfortunately, all the shades in this line are a bit too dark for me. I think this palette would suit people with medium skin tones better.
I've been using them, even if it's not that often, and overall, I like them. But the weird thing with the packaging and the fact that the shadows started to get a bit salty (although they still build up fine) makes me think I can't give them a full 5 stars.
So, all in all, these are good Clarins shadows, but with some caveats.
