A Nightmare at Chester Clinic: A Warning to Pet Owners

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm still trying to process the nightmare we had at Chester Clinic. We took our cat, Bart, there after noticing he was acting lethargic. The staff was well-meaning, but they failed to detect a thread he had eaten, which led to a series of complications. It's a warning to pet owners: don't underestimate the importance of experience and attention to detail in veterinary care. If you're looking for top-notch care, keep searching. Chester Clinic's lack of expertise and attention to detail put our pet's life in danger. We were left feeling frustrated and stressed, wondering if we'd made a huge mistake. The clinic's equipment and facilities are important, but they're not enough to save a pet in distress. We're sharing our story to help others avoid a similar experience.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the ordeal my family and I went through with our cat, Bart, at Chester Clinic. The young staff was well-meaning, but they just didn't have the experience to give our pet the care it needed.
This was our poor Bart.Bart had a history of eating threads and strings, which we thought was just a quirk. But one day, he ate a thread from a mullion package, and when we took him to Chester Clinic, they didn't detect the thread until it was too late.
We took Bart to Chester Clinic when we noticed he was lethargic. They did an ultrasound and didn't find anything, but they suggested keeping him in the hospital for observation. We agreed, and they kept us updated on his condition via text messages, which was reassuring at first.
However, things took a turn for the worse when they proposed releasing Bart on a Thursday, and we took him home. But by Saturday morning, he was back to his old self, and we took him back to the clinic. This time, they suggested keeping him in the hospital again, but we refused. They told us to continue force-feeding him, but they didn't explain how to do it properly. Luckily, we have a veterinarian in Moscow who guided us on how to do it.
After force-feeding him, Bart vomited, and we took him back to the clinic. They left him in the hospital again. On Sunday morning, the doctor called and said they thought they saw something on the ultrasound, and they wanted to operate. They also wanted to perform an esophagogastromy, which we agreed to. But when we arrived at the clinic, they found nothing. Instead, they saw enlarged lymph nodes and took a biopsy, saying they might be caused by the thread.
On Monday morning, we received a message saying Bart was coughing up mucus and pus. They repeatedly suctioned out the mucus under anesthesia, and they asked for our consent to take a sputum sample and perform a cytology test for asthma. I, of course, gave my consent. I asked them to take an X-ray, which showed significant lung damage. They started treating him with antibiotics, but the X-rays continued to show no improvement. The doctors didn't seem concerned about the worsening lung damage, and the antibiotics didn't change anything.
Four days later, on Thursday, we received the sputum test results, which showed a Klebsiella pneumoniae infection. The other veterinarians told us that he contracted it during the force-feeding in the hospital. The clinic told us that the pneumonia started because of the vomiting, which caused the vomit to enter his trachea and develop into pneumonia.
At first, the clinic's doctors would call us to update us on Bart's condition, but soon they stopped calling, and we only received messages asking us to come to the clinic. When we visited Bart, he was listless and had a greenish discharge from his nose. On Friday evening, the clinic called to say he needed a plasma transfusion. On Saturday morning, they called to say he was getting worse and couldn't breathe on his own. They suggested taking him to another clinic with a ventilator, which we did. When my husband arrived at the clinic, the reanimatologist told him that Bart had passed away.
When we picked up Bart's body, we were given a single discharge document but no medical chart detailing his treatment. We have no idea what they did to him.
We spent a total of 270,000 rubles on 'treatment'.
