A Cheese Lover's Paradise Falls Short of Expectations

summarizeEditor's Summary

I visited this cheese museum on a weekday, almost at closing time, and was expecting a more immersive experience. The museum's location near the city center is a major plus, but the lack of time to fully explore the exhibits was a letdown. The guided tour was informative, but I felt rushed. The themed shop in the courtyard is a nice touch, but the selection of cheeses was limited. I was underwhelmed by the museum's offerings, to be honest.

I stopped by this cheese museum on the recommendation of friends who are big fans of Kostroma's cheeses, even before the Cheese Fair and the Cheese Maker.
The museum is situated near the city center, down by the river, and after visiting, you can head next door to the Museum of Sweets or take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque embankment.
The entrance to the museum is from the courtyard, and the courtyard also has a themed shop where you can buy cheese and souvenirs.
I visited the museum on a weekday, almost at closing time - I managed to catch the last tour, which had about five people, and it felt spacious because there was no one else in the museum.
The tour was a mixed bag - it was both enjoyable and a letdown.
The tour itself was quite interesting, but the "stand here and listen" approach didn't quite work, especially since the tour didn't cover all the exhibits, and it's hard to take everything in.
The tour guide's story was engaging and interesting. At one point, you can even pet a cow.
There were numerous diverse exhibits to check out, but I felt rushed and didn't get to see everything.
The museum is located on two floors, with a beautiful staircase leading up (and yes, there's even more cheese up there).
One of the quirky little exhibits collects toy cows - it's a fun touch.
There's also an interactive exhibit about one of the major cheese-producing countries, and you get to guess which one it is. The correct answer is highlighted on the ceiling.
Another interactive exhibit tells the story of the weirdest cheeses - it's definitely a conversation starter.
After each stage of the tour, they give you some time to take photos and catch up on the rest of the exhibit. But be warned - if you've got enough time for photos, you won't have time to read everything.
Once you've checked out the second floor, there's a tasting session - and let me tell you, it's a highlight of the tour.
But if you're looking for something to blow your mind during the tour, you might be disappointed - the tour is interesting, but it covers far from everything, which is a shame.
The tasting, on the other hand, is very delicious - you get to try five types of cheese, four snacks, and a plastic cup of white wine (you can swap it for juice instead).
Now, let's talk about the cheese:
Kostroma mozzarella is neutral and soft - it's pretty good in terms of taste, but overall, it's nothing special.
Kostroma cheese from Kostroma, on the other hand, is incredibly delicious - it's the perfect cheese for sandwiches and stuff, and it'll work for just about anything. In terms of taste, it's the essence of the word 'cheese' - exactly the flavor you'd imagine when you hear that word.
King's Cheese with a walnut flavor, but no walnuts, is a bit of a letdown - it tastes like a cheese with walnuts, or with parsley, or with chanterelles. This familiar pleasant taste is for fans, but I don't see the point of getting it unless you can't have walnuts and you want to try it with them.
The smoked suluguni is a very pleasant execution - not rubbery, not over-smoked, and the cheese itself is quite good.
The Bujer cheese, a hard cheese, an analogue of the Swiss Gruyère, is very good, nice, and pleasant in taste.
The tour ends with a visit to the store where you can buy cheese and souvenirs - it's a great way to cap off the experience.
Overall, I'd say the museum is a bit chaotic, and the tour doesn't quite live up to its potential. But the tasting is definitely worth it - and who knows, you might even learn something about cheese.
