Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria

I've been to my fair share of castles, but Erken Castle in Kabardino-Balkaria is something special. This place is a real hidden gem in the Caucasus, and it's a must-visit destination for anyone who loves history and breathtaking views. You'll feel like you're stepping back in time as you explore the castle and take in the stunning scenery. The region's unique culture and natural beauty make it a truly unforgettable experience. We wrapped up our first day in Kabardino-Balkaria and headed to Nalchik for the night after taking in the breathtaking Chegem Waterfalls. The experience left me with a sense of awe, and I couldn't wait to see what the next day had in store. On our way to Nalchik, we stopped by the Chateau Erken Castle for a visit.

Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria In the twilight hours, the castle seemed mysterious and ancient, with a charm that's hard to resist.
Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria The castle grounds feature two artificial lakes where ducks and swans swim, and even fish swim around. The birds are well-fed, as people try to feed them bread. As soon as you approach the shore, they all swim towards you, hoping for a snack.

Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria The castle is situated in the middle of the second lake, giving the illusion that it's floating. Yes, the castle itself is closed for visiting, but the exterior view is captivating, to say the least.

Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria It's connected to the shore via a bridge, guarded by stone panthers on both sides - a unique and intriguing touch.

Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria The castle grounds are massive, and we didn't get to explore the entire area, but what we saw left us speechless. The place is spotless and well-maintained, even considering it's off-season (mid-November). There were still plenty of people around, and the cafe was open, serving great coffee and snacks that hit the spot.
Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria There's a parking lot and an entrance fee of 100 rubles per person, but it's almost symbolic considering the size of the territory and the effort that goes into maintaining it.
Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria We also spotted a pavilion with a peacock, but it was already getting dark, and the photo didn't turn out well.
Chateau Erken Castle, Kabardino-Balkaria Despite the short time we had, we managed to take plenty of great photos and enjoy our visit to this hidden gem. If you're looking for a unique experience, Chateau Erken Castle is definitely worth a visit.
