Burlesque Falls Flat Despite Christina Aguilera's Talents
I remember being totally captivated by the trailer for this movie years ago. It had me hooked from the start - a sassy, talented performer combined with a classic American dream story was a winning combo.
Fast forward to about 10 years ago, and I actually enjoyed it back then. I loved the film's energetic stage performances, impressive costumes, and the sense of possibility that permeated every scene.
However, after rewatching it recently, my enthusiasm has definitely worn off. The movie's plot is super generic and straightforward - it's a classic American dream story, the kind you see in countless American movies.
The film follows a young, ambitious girl who quits her terrible job, sends her boss packing, and heads to the big city to chase her dreams. The story is predictable and follows the classic genre formula to a T.
She gets robbed on her first day, then gets rejected by the team, but eventually things start to turn around. The stage setup, vocals, and all the rest of the performance were pretty impressive, and it's fun to watch on action.
One thing that didn't quite work for me was the awkward dance moves and the cheesy choreography. With a decent choreographer and Christina's talents, they could've done so much better.
The romantic relationship between Christina Aguilera and the Twilight vampire is another thing that caught my eye. The vampire actor was so uninteresting that I couldn't even be bothered to look up his name.
But I guess he got lucky and got to share some romantic scenes with Christina Aguilera. Seeing Christina walk around her 'friend's' house naked and the way he tried to kick her out was actually kind of adorable.
Christina Aguilera is still really good, and her face, figure, movements, and voice - everything's top-notch. She's a genius woman, and women like her come along once in a thousand years.
However, despite Christina's talents, the movie falls flat. The plot is shallow, and the characters are one-dimensional. I found myself rolling my eyes at the predictable twists and turns.
Shirley MacLaine, on the other hand, is a different story altogether. At the time of filming, she was 63, but she's now 76 years young. There's been a lot written about her numerous plastic surgeries, and it shows.
She really does look like a waxwork, and to be honest, I couldn't even muster up any praise for her acting skills. Her face is completely expressionless, and the whole film is just her with the same blank look on her face.
It's a shame, because I have a huge amount of respect for this acting legend and love her voice and her work. But as an actress, she gets a big fat zero from me. Actors need to be able to move their faces, but Shirley's had so many facelifts she can barely even smile.
Of course, there's no way she can act when she can't even raise an eyebrow. Stuart Tuckwood plays his usual role - the sidekick, assistant, or right-hand man to Shirley MacLaine.
I have to say, the film reminded me of 'The Devil Wears Prada' - the same deadpan expressions and even some of the same lines. Ignoring the predictable plot, Cher's lack of movement, and all that, I have to mention a few things that stood out to me.
The film is pretty average - it's got no real substance, no deep meaning, and no life-changing moments. Two things that really stood out to me, though, were Sher's and Aguilera's vocals - they're seriously impressive.
And the stage show, minus the choreography, was pretty cool. I'm not sure what the creators were going for with this movie, but they didn't quite hit the mark.
I'd only recommend this movie to young girls who want to see a pretty, if totally unrealistic, story. I was definitely one of those girls 10 years ago! If you're a viewer with any critical thinking skills, you'll probably end up feeling the same way I did.
Overall, I'd give this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars. It's not a bad film by any means, but it's definitely not a great one either. It's just a mediocre movie that fails to deliver on its promise.
